Just a thought. What about a forum for people compiling packages from source. Since it's not necesarilly tied to one distro, and it not exactly programming...Just a thought. Called something like Linux-Source, or something like that. Be blunt! Come out and say "It's a stupid idea"
Or Linux-Software, since it's talking about compiling software from source. Also, the vast majority of the questions we get about compiling from source are: "so I have this file called xxx.tar.gz, now what?".
I don't think that a forum like this would get enough traffic (and, indeed, enough different traffic) to make it worthwhile.

I think it would get enough traffic but it would be a bunch of repeated steps and solutions. But like the Software Forum description states: "Having a problem installing a new program?", I think they're best suited in the Software forum and it's one of the reasons we have it around..
Wait, here's an idea. What about a way to search for a source file. Yes, I know there's sourceforge, freshmeat, and various others, but there is an LQ ISO section. What about a cross referance of source packages, It would allow a user to search by title, use, and description. I don't know what kind of load this would put on the servers, nor do I know how to go about implementing it(I'm 16, give me a break ) Just another thought.

I'd say that would be too much overhead to maintain/upkeep and with sourceforge and freshmeat out there, why have another site when those are already very complex as it is?
I think one of the main reasons we started the ISO section cause there really wasn't a comprehensive list to search and catagorize ISO downloads for distributions.
It would be nice but it'd probably require constant attention to maintain.
this is already in place, then i think all issues will be covered here
while compiling from source if we take care of the instructions that are there in the INSTALL/readme file ,then there are very less problems
most of the problems are due to the fact that we do not take care of dependencies and version no. else the package is buggy
ok. Is there any way I personally can better the site? I understand reporting posts and so forth. Other way I(and others) can help? I have pretty basic linux knowledge but I have looked at some 0 posts threads, most of their problems, I don't think I could help. Thoughts?
this is from the box between two menus MY LQ and Main Menu in the right pane

In regards to what masand mentioned, just answering others posts, reporting posts, etc is contributing to LQ and the community.
If you have the time, extra hardware, installing different Distro's to write reviews is a big plus.
HCL is also contributing if you have a bunch of hardware lying around that might not be in the HCL database already.
Submitting Bookmarks now to helpful and related sites is a plus since the bookmarks.linuxquestions.org was just launched.
Overall, just adding anything that might benefit others is contributing and makes LQ a better overall site for a one stop resource for Linux and OpenSource technologies.
