I was just thinking, I want to know more about the moderators here on LQ. Real name, what they work and where, and short info on how they became involved.
Not only would it be fun to read, but it would help when listening to LQRadio, especially with the names, since they tend to just tell their real names their, and we others are used to their nicks.

Just a thought.
Where we work and where? Sounds kind of freaky to me and a totally inappropiate question. If a moderator wants to give up such information, by all means, let them but asking for it comes off in the wrong way.
Real Name: Drew (Not my birth given name, short for my middle name but this is what I go by except at LWE where usually the mods will call me tk, except Jeremy for some reason, he calls me Drew in the forums even.) Occupation: Systems Administrator (More of a Backup/Storage Administrator, 90% of my work is maintaining our 80 Terabytes of data and it's still growing.) Location: Texas (If you browse or been around long enough, you'll know what city.) Sex: Male Single/Married: Married Children: One on the way Computers: 5 OS of Choice: Slackware
Involvment: I found LQ.org by accident. I was goofing off by just typing random names in the address bar looking for Linux websites and I happen to just type linuxquestions.org and there it was. I registered, answered a few questions and my addiction started. The site was small, there seemed to be cool people on here and about 5 months later or so, Jeremy then asked me to become a Moderator for Linux - General since all I did was post answers to other questions in the forums. At the same time I became a moderator, we had several others join as moderators, some are still around, some aren't.
Freaky? Well, I am just interested in what you people do all day that give you the time to moderate LQ. :P
Seriously I just came up with something and work is quite interesting, especially if some guru works at a hamburger bar. :)
Of course you guys should not be forced to answer anything. But the name is the most important one, since that will tie the voice to a nick here at the forums. :)
Congratulations to your first kid! Hope it works out fine.
Oh, btw, I wonder where Jeremy comes from. I have noticed that he pronounces "are" kinda funny. "Aargh"-like, almost like a sea captain. :P

Northeastern United States, a Whois database search will most likely give you more details..
Originally posted by Ephracis And you just said it was freaky by me to wonder where you worked? I think whois databases are the freakiest. But thanks for the info.
Well to me, asking where someone works and where is a little different if they choose to register a domain name where it's made public of who's the registered owner.
Since this threads got the mod's attention anyways, im gona shove in sideways a few comments.. (;
Ive myself been here from January, so am pretty new, but have sofar had a great time at LQ. So, a huge thanks goes over to the mods, and especially Jeremy.. Youve realy captured the essential aspects of helping people.. (:
And to get back on the topic for a change, it realy does / would help to know the realnames of the people involved when listening to the radio shows and podcasts. Sofar the user profiles ive looked at havnt had much info on them, so no luck there.. But id myself be very content with just names to link to the nicks.. (:
Yes, and any other fact about the mod (especially how they got involved with LQ) is just fun facts. :)
btw, the reason this site is so great is because:
1) They do not allow avatars
2) 0 reply posts
3) The mods (think it is their work) make sure there are no ugly flamewars/trolls etc.
About #3 I think we should also thank those anonymous who report bad posts. :)
How many moderators are there on LQ, total? And how many are involved in LQ as a whole, not only moderating the forums?
The world of the mods is one of secrecy and pain. The unwary and uninitiated should not venture there.....
But, since Tk bit, I will too: Real Name:Ray Occupation:Area Lead - this means I have around 25 staff on various account sites for whom I am the line manager. Previous to this promotion (it's still new enough to squeak) I worked in desktop support as an engineer and as a team leader. Location:Dartford, UK. It's South of London, in North Kent and we have a tunnel and a bridge! Sex:Male Single/Married:Cohabiting (living in sin, if you like. And I do.) Children:One, a daughter Computers:3 OS of Choice:Slackware
Involvment:I got here in the same way that most members do - I typed a question into Google and this site was at the top of the list. In fact, my first question had an awful title and I was pulled up by a mod, Trickykid, I think. So as you can see, we're not perfect! I was a member for a couple of years before Jeremy asked me if I wanted to be a mod. Because my Linux technical knowledge isn't that great I hesitated for a while, but then I thought "hey, I know how to search for an answer" and I accepted.
The site was smaller when I joined, but the same community spirit is still here and the changes have all been for the better.

Small indeed. I remember the days when I could sign in after missing a day and there'd be 30 new posts.. now you miss a day and it can be 2000 posts at times..
