Most weeks I scroll through the newbie section and enjoy reading a question header
and second guessing what the answer to a problem might be
Put a few threads in myself and got some great answers but hey
Moderators, Senior Members, Gurus
Some of them are so bloody rude
Hey if you can't be polite GO DO SOMETHING ELSE
I mean good manners cost nothing eh

Bearing in mind that mods are expected to be around, what else are we to do?

If you can quote specifics.... Don't forget that a good few members have been around for a while, maybe you just haven't got a feel for how things work?

Sorry, sometimes good manners cost the whole point of the reply.

Sometimes the entire original question was based on misconceptions.

I usually don't know a polite way to tell the OP to throw out what he thinks he knows so he can figure out what his real question ought to be and actually get some help. It is an inherently negative message and an inherently insulting message.

I try to avoid injecting needless extra insults into such a message. But to phrase that negative message in a way that no one would take as rude generally means phrasing it so it won't be understood.

On the flip side, when I ask a question and get a really lame answer, I try a lot harder to keep anything that even looks like rudeness out of my reply (no matter how much I want to complain), because I've been posting in forums long enough to know there is no percentage in that. The person who gave the lame reply isn't going to suddenly give me a good reply because I show how upset I am at the lame reply. Meanwhile anyone who might give a good reply is more likely to do so if I keep my answer to the lame reply painfully polite.

If phrased correctly, telling someone that they are completely on the wrong track is not rude and is totally acceptable.

Consider two ways of saying something:

1. "It appears to me that you have some fundamental misunderstandings of how the frammus modulator works. Here is a link that you might want to read."

2. "You idiot!! If you had read the manual on the frammus modulator, you would not have asked such a silly question."

There's no insult in #1---it is simply your direct and honest assessment of the situation.


(No, I do not know what a frammus modulator is.....;) )

Have not been around all that long but I read, at least quickly, all new posts and it has been my observation that the vast majority of all senior members exercise extreme patience when dealing with blatant and repeated breaches of forum etiquette. Whenever I observe rudeness, sarcasm, etc., it is doled out with restraint considering the behavior of offending member.

That's the "needless extra insult" that I claimed above (I hope accurately) to keep out of my replies.

Sometimes that's just the answer to the OP's question and it is hard to come up with a different answer that coveys anything useful. (OK, I'm exaggerating a little bit about exactly that answer. But it isn't too far off.)

I don't want to try and completely sort the fly specks from the pepper, but---I would argue that is is always possible to say what is needed without insulting someone. EASY??---perhaps not, but always POSSIBLE.

Who is the one that needs to learn some manners ? You should have been reported for this type of behavior, insulting members here for no reason.

The answer seems reasonable, and at least it is written in complete sentences unlike every post you've ever made.

There is a button "Report" for every post.
If there is any problem with any post,you can report.

Perhaps you should start your own website. Then you can decide how you treat others, and how they are or are not 'allowed' to respond to your unwarranted attacks.

But then again, some people just bloody deserve it. :D

Agreed, and I said as much in the original thread. If you think business_kid's reply was rude I think you have some growing up to do before you enter the big, bad world. ;)

First you ought to think a little more about your objective for your next post.

Do you want to win a fight? Or do you want to get a Linux question answered? Or do you want to impress people? Or what?

If you want to get a question answered, you should avoid biting back to whoever might be rude to you. Matching the rudeness of whoever has been rudest in a thread is a poor strategy.

If an expert (or someone who thinks they are) thinks your question was unclear or otherwise flawed enough that they think criticism of the question is more appropriate than the reply you wanted, you should start by considering whether they are right. If criticism of the question makes you write a better question, they have helped you get a better answer. If they're wrong, there just isn't anything useful you can do about it. Sorry. That's one of the unfortunate aspects of forums. Someone polluted your thread with a bad reply. Nothing you add can make that better, only worse. You can bite back and turn the thread into a fight between you and them, or you can ignore it and hope someone more constructive replies.

If you're more interested in winning the fight, none of my advice here is of any use to you and you will be the moderators' problem, not mine.

So kevmcool called a member a "butt plug" for asking what distro he uses?

Actually, the Distribution thing beneath someone's user name is often innacurate, because you could have switched distros and forgot about it, or maybe you're just playing around with another distro.
