member photos?
forgive me if this has been asked or suggested before... but i recently came accross a forum ( http://www.film-tech.com ) and was interested at how they have litle pictures of themselves next to their names in the forums, perhaps this could be an option for members to put a picture of themselves (sorta like a signiture, except a small, perhaps 32x32, or 64x64 pixe photo under their names). This shouldn't take up more space than alot of icons just a thought.

i'm not sure i know what you meen by avatars, but i don't see how a headshot in the name column of the post would look 'unprofessional', but then again it isn't my website
The probable reasons there wont be avatars/member photos on this site is that:
1.possibly disruptive
2.Easily abused
3. Two words: Bandwidth hog
Primarily bandwidth hog and abuse. On a small site, avatar bandwidth usage is not a problem, but on this huge site, it would be. And as for abuse, a user at my old message boards abused the feature by putting a well-known offensive pic (real name of the site not used: "goatman") in his avvy. Needless to say, he was banned as soon as I saw it. But a multitude of users doing it would be very bad.
Hm... I have a nice piccy of me in a Hannible Lecter style mask. Would that do?
Seriously, though. This (type of) question has been asked so many times that it isn't funny. Do a quick search for AVATAR and see what you come up with. I appreciate that the name avatar doesn't really reflect the idea of having a mini photo, but how would you stop someone putting up something really annoying? It is easier to just not use them at all. And besides, it would clutter the pages no end. Let's just stick with the format as it is.
