Question Many of us see a post title and react,,, perhaps a detour would help‽

Maybe past LQ's prime... or, mine?

Could you please clarify what you mean by a "detour"?

I thought everyone had a detour. Here is mine.

As far as being past your prime? Your night job is making you bend over when you stand up from your desk is all.

Is this sort of what you mean by a detour:

Many times I have been attracted by a post title, but, when I read the post, I decide that I am not competent to answer it and leave it for someone else. Occasionally, when it's a question I find intriguing, I will subscribe to the thread without posting to it so I can learn from what more knowledgeable persons than I post to it.

I don't have a tally, but I suspect I've made more posts asking for more information or clarification than I have made proffering possible solutions. That may be the trainer in me, as the best training is that which leads the trainee to find answers on his or her own.

LQ for me is continual learning; it has certainly contributed much more to me than I to it. And it's where I decompress at the end of the day.

As for extracurricular activities, I have a blog to feed. It's very much a second- or possibly even a third- or fourth-tier blog, but it's 12 years old and you know how hungry teenagers can be! Plus making it happen is what brought me to Linux, so I owe it something.

I answer posts I am not competent to reply to . I figure it is a open forum. Free advice even. Take it or leave it. To the detractors who think being who I am bothers them.

Sounds like a personal problem to me.

I do also, if I can find something via a web search that looks helpful and relevant! Or if I think I can ask a good clarifying question.

I've learned a lot of neat stuff that's helped me through LQ-related web searches. Trying to help others is a great way to learn.

Yeah. Me too. Sometimes I am incorrect. But I got broad shoulders and and thick skin. I can take a legit critique.

But when it comes to opinions. Well. We all came with belly buttons also.

Edit:

Here is a fine example of me being way outa of my league.

If I woulda known the original posters personality involved. I woulda left the thread alone.

Wow!

Too bad the "harsh words" were removed. They would have made the thread worth copying to read for a laugh when in a bad mood. Stupidity, sense of entitlement and rudeness combined. Just ... wow.

If you search my posts, you will find a number of occasions (I hope it's under two dozen) in which I've apologized for misreading OPs question.

I may still not get the OP's question, but as your thread evolves, I approach a certain level of comprehension.

Being less “on the Internet” recently and hopefully in the future, I notice changes. For example, I do only answer questions seriously, when I consider them serious, of some importance to some people and my own knowledge of the topic sufficient. Else, I either ignore much more topics than before and not only on LQ, or else, might feel downright obliged to do the utmost to allow a topic to sink into oblivion...

I am missing important information, while gaining more tranquility.

This has to do with my observation that people exaggerate everything. In my French environment, exaggeration appears to become the essence of life. Before long, we will beat each other senseless each time that my conclusion that humanity will be extinct before 2060 coincides with my neighbors' discovery that not all that is posted “on the Internet” is actually true.

The times are rough, this way. Maybe going off-line would be best, after all.
