Make easier to use
Hi Jeremy,

I have tried using to ask a question about linux many times, but I find it very confusing.

I wish you would put something on your home page that says something like, "Ask your Question here!" Then have a box where a person could ask a question.

I think a change like this would be a big help to new users.

We try to explain it in detail in the FAQ and "How to ask a question" does appear near the top of every LQ page until you have a post. You seem to have quite a few posts now - are you still finding it confusing?

Most of the people looking for answers are usually in a hurry and they don't have time to read explanations how to post a question. It should be so obvious and there should be form for asking questions always on a first page.
Since this is my first reply I also thought it would be easy but I lost my first reply because I clicked on Post Reply button on the top left instead of Post Quick Reply at the bottom. So if you can either remove that top button from there and/or have alert after data was entered in quick reply box.

hey that's good point about the 'post reply' button being top left right near this input spot. but as for asking a question, i don't think a quick 'ask your question here' would suffice as people really do need to know how to include all relevent information. and even though so many people think they're in too much of a hurry to do anything properly or respectfully, the reason the forums save old questions/answers is so that they don't need to be gone over and over and over so before someone starts asking questions it's fundamentally important that they be reminded to search for the answers first. is a great community and i've now effectively gotten online with ubuntu + wireless Thanks to Everyone!

Would it work to automatically pull the text from the Quick Reply box across to the "POST REPLY" button, just like the "Go Advanced" button does.

I'm on the side that says we do not have a problem......On any website, forum, etc. you have to learn where things are. I think LQ is laid out as well as any of them---and in some ways better.

I agree. Hell, if I can figure it out, it couldn't get any easier. :D

While LQ is easy to use and users should be able to figure it out, it's good to think of things that are not obvious to us long-time users because we've been around a long time and gotten used to it. While we might not make it totally idiot proof, it's good to stop and consider if we could make it a bit more idiot proof sometimes. :)

From the perspective of a certified idiot, gained from the university of life, I still get very frustrated - not because of the design of LQ, but rather the somewhat intermitent nature of my wi-fi ISP connection - when I have typed in a long post in reply to a thread and hit the 'Post Quick Reply' button only to lose it in the ether*net. My usual response is to type a much shorter post/answer using Kate and then cut and paste it into the 'PQR' box and try again.

Question: Is there a way I can/could save incrementally a partially composed reply, while I go off to another tab in my browser to look up a reference to another post and/or site for inclusion? Because my upload speed is not great; it is quicker for me to include URL's rather than quotes from other posts, chunks of code, or my output from console commands as examples.

I know I am basically lazy, but trying to be helpful isn't necessarily conducive to spending hours trying to post a considered response.

Is there any hope for me?

PS: It just happened to me again - and I had to log into my ISP again when I hit Post Quick Reply. My solution this time was to go back to this page (rather than reconnecting to my ISP) and lo and behold right clicking in the posting box offered me an 'undo' option which popped the foregoing post back in place. How was I meant to know that was/is a partial answer to my problem???
