Does the balance icon add more rep than saying the post was helpful?

AFAICT, when I add rep, it's +6; when I click "helpful", it's +1. Don't know why, & I would be curious to know what the criteria are.

Also, the rep (scales) icon allows you to give a custom comment.

Rep: Reputation: Disabled
What would be interesting at this stage of the game is a high-level look at whether / how enabling the LQ reputation system (and its sister system - "did you find this helpful?") has affected user behavior. I'm a total novice with statistics, but the following types of questions come to mind:
  • For the 50 users with the highest overall "rep points", does the bulk of their pointage come from peers adding rep, or from peers clicking 'yes, this post is helpful'?
  • How large is the subset of users that doles out the most rep? (i.e. Do 5% of active users with rep enabled hand out 90% of the overall points?)
  • For the most active users who click 'yes, this post is helpful', does the data show that they're targeting specific other users?
  • Likewise, for the most active users who click 'no, this post is [not] helpful', does the data show that they're targeting specific other users?

... things along those lines are usually pretty revealing.

It would be interesting to do some deep analytics (and I'll work on doing that), but a quick look indicates that the usage is quite spread out and that the Helpful system is by far the largest source of rep.

Is there a way to deduct reputation from someone who posts insulting or condescending remarks? This may have been covered already but there are 72 pages of posts so I may have missed something. I think this would keep people civil when they post if they know repercussions for this behavior are present.

Not anymore. It used to be possible to give negative reputation (it shows up as a red mark in your record), but this has since been disabled.

A huge part of this thread was about issues involving the negative reputation system.

The negative rep system has been disabled after multiple flamewars started by someone down-repping another person for reasons others disagree with.

See page 62, that was when it was disabled, so read this page:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...21/page62.html

I agree with Jeremy's decision to disable neg rep until clear guidelines are formulated.

Reading through most of this, I need to ask: Has there been any actual guidelines written up yet for the negative rep system?

No. That's a huge part of the reason it was disabled.

Okay, let me rephrase that. No. That's a huge part of the reason it hasn't been re-enabled.

It is just you.

Wait another month and things will be busy, at least concerning Ubuntu with the 11.04 release. I think folks will be screaming.
