Additionally, as an update on negative rep. It's currently tracking at about 1.25% of reps, accounting for less than .3% of the rep in the system.

I think the root should hurry up in providing the new rules of using the down rep system before the things start getting out of hands, LOL, seriously speaking people have started playing games with the down rep power now!

The down rep in that case was just plain wrong to me. However, the sympathy rep given to the wounded was just as wrong. I reckon there will always be some abuse.

Are these numbers relevant? They show how often it is used, not how they are used, which seems to be the issue from day one.

Even if there will be a "solid list of reasons" of some kind, people will still feel the need to and have the tool to play moderator (I agree fully with Xavier's reply, especially his conclusion).

The way things are going now I feel (have said this before) that LQ is becoming a harsher environment, which cannot be a good thing and will also erode the 'newby friendly' character of this board. A shame if you ask me.

As always my 2c.

Yes, it was wrong to down rep here. If the OP puts that as an answer on their homework, they will deserve it for asking about homework in the first place and being so ignorant as not even to run the command before putting it as the answer.

I hope that something is done about this. I've tried coming up with a list, and it is kinda hard, because there really isn't much appropriate use of neg rep.

on@anishakaul,
Thanks for the Laugh Link!

The thread was very funny to active members but the drift would cause any new member to run.

This rep system has a purpose, I think?

Just numbers to me. I participate here to give back to the community. Hopefully my aid or answers will help someone and that person may help someone else down the line. If we lead by example then this rep thing will never be negative.
But being a human, I'm sure someone will take something out of context that I will say and down rep me. So what, a difference of opinion or else I'm not personable enough to that person. Poor communication between communities? Misinterpretation(s)?

I can see 'jeremy's' reasoning for a system but guys it's just that. A aid or means to feedback to the community. Some people are looking at this as a life thing. It's not! If someone down reps me, so be it. They must have a reason and hopefully they will provide it. If not then I'll have to deal with it or not. My choice!

Too many members are paying to much attention to or weighting this rep system to a level that is some form of personal attack, not proportional or even relative form but an attack. If you feel someone is attacking or such then just report the problem. There is no absolute way to exception rule the means to satisfy all states.

"
Don't sweat the small stuff! And it's all small stuff". Great read and applicable here.

Thankfully we are not all alike or this would be a very boring forum. Personalities will clash at some point. Hopefully no blood will be drawn/let.

Honestly, Gary, I find these kind of threads a source of entertainment That thread made me laugh hard. But at the same time I found it is to be a cause of concern too for LQ's future.

After all LQ should not be turned into a playground where a member down reps some one and others jump in to down rep him and prove support to the wounded member by up repping him (as a sympathy) and a mod finally ... the thread.

Hi onebuck

That was a good read - thanks for that!

I had turned off the rep system for a couple of weeks due to a down-rep for no reason. Then I decided to turn it back on because it was not that important. I really do not pay it much mind at all unless someone points out an alleged abuse or unfairness. It is usually good for a few laughs. Still, its all a matter of perspective, and I don't mean to make light of someone's feelings.

I apologize for being behind on getting this list together. That being said there is absolutely no evidence that things are "getting out of hand". Please stop fear mongering.

I think they are relevant in that it shows that the general tone and consensus at LQ over overwhelmingly positive.

I'd still be interested in concrete reasons you think we're getting "harsher". The playing moderator argument seems like a non-starter to me as down rep carries with it absolutely no repercussions and the person down modding in these cases is clearly not marked as a mod.

Excuse me, but I find that to be rude, I was laughing when I wrote that statement. I felt concerned with LQ that's why I bothered to post, but now I regret it.

Some additional comments.

* I think a couple members are actively looking for individual instances that they don't agree with and are then highlighting them in this thread. This highly anecdotal and highly skewed view of the system is then having a negative impact on how other members are viewing the system.

* I'd like people to keep in mind that a negative rep carries with it no repercussions whatsoever and is in no way a moderated action.

* We have a massive community here at LQ. We work very hard to keep the community friendly and welcoming to newbies. We will continue to do this. That being said if you look hard enough in *any* community this size you are going to find borderline threads, members that don't agree with each other and a whole host of other things. It's always a balancing act between having an open, transparent community that fosters real discussion and having to close threads, edit content and ban members. A move in *either* direction has the potential to negatively impact LQ and I think our mod team does an absolutely fantastic job at this. We know we can always improve though and you're welcome to make specific suggestions on how we can do so (not in the thread of course, but a new one).

In that thread, forrestt said:

However, at this point TobiSGD should be glad I downrepped him. His rep before all of this was 81, now it's 89 which tells me that a bunch of other people don't really care about being helpful. I just hope you all will actually improve your posts, but I guess quantity is the only thing that matters.
What did that mean?

Anyway, that reminds me of something I thought about before, that the way the current rep system is doesn't actually measure a person's helpfulness. For example, an unhelpful person who has been around for years and an extremely helpful person who has been around for weeks will have the same rep, and I think that's extremely unfair!

Two additional notes:

* I've disabled down rep until we can come up with some guidelines.

* I'd consider up repping someone for the sole reason you disagreed with a down rep as an abuse of the system moving forward.
