Of course if someone points out something I deem worthy of a reply, I'll reply and let them know, but at the same time the rep system allows me to read a thread, understand it and still highlight points I think are worthy of being highlighted without having to try replying to everyone.

Unfortunately that one is going to be a bit difficult to work around the way things are currently implemented. I'll try to come up with a solutions, but it should have no impact on "forcing you to rep other posts" when you think about it logically, as $x number of members will *always* be in your rep spread.

Forgive me if I've missunderstood but wont the Rep: link give you want you need in this instance? I've just checked on Jeremys post, and it also shows the previous reputation added by others.

It is still not clear how much points are given at a certain level. But I'm guessing that you need more then 13 points and a handful of post to be able to give more then 1 full reputation point (helpful YES would be full_rep_points/2).

If a member gives off a rep of 1 and uses the helpful system, it was getting rounded to 0. I think it makes sense for them to give off 1 when using the system, so will make that change later today unless anyone can think of a valid reason not to.

You can't understand what I am saying because I am not a native English speaker. I find it difficult to convey myself properly,

This helpful post feature is getting me down now, just because some people DO NOT SIMPLY KNOW WHEN AND HOW TO USE IT !!!!

@Jeremy It is unjust, because it pretends to reward technical help but it has in fact its main focus on social interaction. That's none of your fault but inherent in how it is set up. As an aside Merriam Webster has to say to "reputation":

Thus it is not centered on technical skills.

Intransparent insofar as people don't have to stand by their actions or rather words, i.e. the judgment they rendered. As I said, I'll give my appreciation openly and rather accept the rare flame / trollpost as inconsequential without starting a downgrading vendetta. Nasty people don't tend to stay here anyway.

Thanks for the confirmation. Our goal for members who have opted out is pretty much for their experience to be as LQ was before we rolled this out.

To be honest, I can think of at least one reason (and no, you not being a native English speaker is not one of them - your English is usually fine in my opinion). Those reasons aside (and this advice extends to all members at LQ I think), if you have the type of personality who is going to pain over each and every instance like this, opting out of the system is probably in your best interest.

I don't think it would be possible for it to be purely objective, human nature being what it is. I'd be inclined to down-vote replies that had the "RTFM, newbie" attitude, even if the advice given was technically OK. And I wouldn't be bothered about hiding the fact that it was me that down-voted it.

A couple things to keep in mind.

* Right now, down reps account for less than 4% of the reps.
* We're actively monitoring for abuses, misuses and loopholes in the system.
* The feature has mostly stabilized now but will be in BETA for some non-trivial amount of time. During that period we will evaluate how it impacts participation and community. During that time we may make some tweaks or changes to address issues that come up. If during the BETA period we decide the feature is not impacting the site positively or is going in a direction we will is unsustainable or unhealthy, we'll disable it.
