Or, a more friendly approach: Give the correct answer(s) a positive rep and don't give the partially incorrect answer any rep (maybe, just maybe a "not helpful", which does not deduct the full rep points).

I have just added reputation to a member who has disabled the reputation system. What's the point? Is it a bug or a feature?

I think the reputation icon should be removed from members who opted out.

It only disables the rep from being shown.

Well, this kind of problem was existent even with the "Thanks" system too !

I had 186 thanks and but it never meant that I was extremely technically sound ! I earned those thanks by trying to point the OP in some right direction ! And times when I was wrong in the C/C++ programming section, the other person corrected me in his post and I immediately followed up with an apology note !

Now that's up to you, i.e. how honest you are, if you realize that the other person is correct, post up and tell the OP to follow his advise !!

Opting out is not the solution, being honest IS !

But can you still see your reputation statistics in your CP?

Yes, it will show up for yourself, but the rest of the world won't see it (not in the posts and not on the statistics page).

At one point or another the person that has disabled the viewing of his/her rep could decide to enable it again. Although I do guess that people will hesitate and in some cases won't give rep points to those that have disabled it.

Sorry if I've missed it in this thread, but is there a mechanism so that postings in General aren't allowed to affect reputation, much like posting in General doesn't apply to post count? I would really hate to see anyone's reputation altered (in either direction) because of a political discussion or position.

I am feeling concerned because I usually help the actual newbie's by pointing them to some known relevant links, and most of the time the newbies find them helpful and click yes on those posts !

And Senior members may be find those "helpful links" or those "helpful pointers" to be too trivial and thus not bother to click a "yes" !

As EricTra said in a previous post that if he finds an answer to be technically very sound then he'll consider clicking a "yes" !
and thus a trivial help to the newbie for his problem may not seem to him as a technically very sound answer even though it has helped the newbie !

Yes, not that it matters much, but you're less likely to get reputation points for informative posts. Some people may think that this guy is not interested in the whole reputation thing anyway so I'm not going to give it to him/her.

Member groups are different from titles. "New Member" defines a person who has joined and never posted. "Member" indicates that the person has at least one post. The "Newbie", "Member", "Guru" etc are all titles and differ from member groups.
