LQ Poll Suggestions

While we run an annual set of polls called the Members Choice Awards, I thought it might be fun to run some semi-official polls periodically throughout the year. Unlike the MCA's these polls will have no set end date and you can see the results real-time. First up, what was your first Linux distribution? This thread can be used to suggest new topics for a future poll. We don't have any set frequency at this point; we'll likely base that on the popularity of the first few polls. Thanks for the feedback.

Cool idea. I'd like to see real-time polls based on current hot-issues. MariaDB vs Mysql for example. Or which OS best supports gamers, or which is the best OSX replacement!

What is the best free LAMP hosting provider? Best online python tutorial? Favorite open source project?

32 bit vs 64 bit OS?
Would be nice to know what's the ratio, how many in your environment are 32 bit or 64 bit?
Mine are 100% 64 bit.

How about a poll on when people started using Linux for the first time?

We're definitely going to use more than one of these suggestions for future polls. The suggestion in post #4 fits in very well with the current poll, so it may be a good candidate for the next poll. Thanks for the feedback, keep it coming.

A poll about people using HDD vs SSD might be interesting.

Hello

Ditto what the above posters suggested... I'm always interested in seeing how the ratios are changing from year to year on those subjects, plus as another suggestion, it's nice to see how many users actually still prefer using desktop machines over portable devices when practical.

How about a poll of which OS was on the hardware people are using when they bought it? I can think of the following options but there may be others:
Windows
Linux
None
Built machine yourself
Mac OS

Why not to be more specific with the security department? My suggestion is "Which is the best linux Firewall distribution?".
Thx

Good idea - Why not consider a poll on what users prefer as their choice of interface - ie a Touch Interface (eg..Unity, Gnome,) Keyboard and Mouse (eg..KDE/XFCE/Mate etc) or just Keyboard (eg..Command Line). If enough people show a very positive view one way or another it should indicate to the Distribution providers just what WE THE USERS want and not what some designer thinks we want.

Just a thought

Some great ideas in this thread!

How about:

Why did you do your last hardware upgrade? (I've never upgraded to get a faster box, even though that's a nice side-effect)
Favourite new feature/discovery in the last n years?
Most desired new OS feature?
What mainframe cloud services do you use?

Some ideas below that would interest me. Not sure they will be suitable for a wider audience:

- Best Python IDE
- python vs perl vs ruby
- Best static website generator
- Which musical instrument do you play? (with one of the options being 'none')
- Do you use Linux to record/produce music?

How about a poll to find out why people moved to Linux?
