Lq Iso

I posted a couple quick stats about LQ ISO, which has been very well received. We are still working to populate the site, but if you notice your favorite distro or mirror missing, do not hesitate to use the suggest feature. If you have any other feedback on the site, feel free to post it here.

First off it's always nice to see the expansions and improvement of LQ, and the iso addition certainly is both. Some days it seems LinuxQuestions.org advance's on a level Mr. Moore himself couldn't have anticipated. :)

If I had to make a suggestion on LQ ISO I would offer that an explanation of the MD5 values next to the ISO images be made. Maybe a link in the "Need Help?" section on the left side of the page. A simple explanation of what and MD5 sum is and why they're important, and maybe a part on how to check MD5 sum's under a variety of operating systems.

This could help lower the bar to those new to Linux, or iso's for that matter, and alleviate future problems resulting from improper iso images.

Could be a tall order but between the whole community here I'm sure we could put something useful together.

The LinuxAnswer linked from "Downloading ISOs" has a brief explanation of how the md5 should be used. Do you think more is needed?

Hi, just posting the stats :)

I downloaded the Knoppix 3.4 ISO from Freenet.de, the Europe server. Im based in the UK and the download averaged at end at 365kbps.

It seemed to peak at just under 400kbps a couple of times.

one thing which seems to be completely absent is DVD ISOs, I know fedora core 2 has them, as may other distros, so they would be a very important thign to include.

While there are a couple DVD ISO's currently in the system, please keep in mind that we are still in the process of populating the site. If you see something missing - be it an iso, a distro, a mirror or whatever, do not hesitate to use the suggest feature so it can be added. Thanks.

The section on md5 sums under the LinuxAnswer section is good - I suppose I was thinking of something along the lines of an explanation for those completely new to iso's and md5 sums. Something as far as what they are and why they're important. And some simple example's for different operating systems. I'd be happy to contribute to a draft on it (or maybe there's already a good version of this somewhere?) . Anyone have any thoughts on this? is it enough info for now or should we add some more?

If you'd like to submit a LinuxAnswer on MD5's and submit it, we'd be happy to take a look at it. Thanks!
