LQ Downtime
Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. LQ was down overnight last night as a result of some database corruption. I have almost everything working as of now, with the one exception being the search. The database would not restore with the FULLTEXT indexes in place. I am going to try to recreate those today. I apologize for the inconvenience. LQ has not had any real downtime in a long time, and we really do strive to make the site available at all times. If you have any questions, feel free to post them in this thread.

I tried temporarily running the search on the main database server, but it was unable to handle the load. Things should be OK now, but searching has been completely disabled. If you have any additional problems, let me know. Thanks.

A small update. The search db server has been brought back online and now has an updated db snapshot. I am recreating the indexes now and search will be enabled as soon as the indexes have been created (I'd guess four hours minimum, maybe longer). Thanks again for the patience. If you notice *any* problems in the meantime, please let me know ASAP. Thanks.

Found a way to speed this up considerably. Full search functionality has been restored.

It's remarkable how little downtime there is on a site as complex and popular as LQ. You certainly don't need to apologize for now-and-then glitches as far as I'm concerned!
However, I did start to sweat and quiver a bit when I kept getting "connection refused" messages this morning trying to get in!

I was also a little worried that the site may have been hacked when i logged on this morning, but then i remembered it is running linux.
I liked the message given when the site was down, much nicer than the usual 404 its broken so tough.
Well done for creating the site!

Thanks for the moral support Everything has been running smoothly for a while now and no additional downtime is anticipated.

ah, so thats with the error i kept getting ..
by the way, the error message (the bold part) ends in the word "database" ... just thought it was a little strange that it said something like "Linuxquestions.org - where new users come for help database"
good to see its working now tho ... very nice Jeremy, i was expecting it to be down a few more hours

I don't know how much help Jeremy has with the actual nuts-and-bolts, server-and-database related operations, but if he's doing it basically by himself he reminds me of a guy that runs, or ran (I've been absent quite a while) one of the most respected bicycling forums on the Net. Basically a single-handed operation by a working guy and ardent cyclist.
It's devoted men and women like Jeremy and the bike guy that help me believe the Internet is the greatest single human invention, no exaggeration. I'm amazed at people that don't appreciate it. What a great thing it is to be able to get help from sources like this, and the bike site. And many others! And it sure doesn't happen without a lot of hard work and long hours.
Much appreciated.

I also was wondering, but I have to say it is amazing how fast you solved this problem with a side that is so big.
You are doing a great job here, and without the long time support and help of this site and itīs communty, I would have turned my back on Linux for a long time, because sometimes it not only needs technical support, but some moral support too, and I can always find what I need here.
So, this little downtime is yet another opportunity for me to say thank you
Keep it up
