Linux on PowerPC

I know we have AIX, and other threads devoted to unix workstations, but sometimes when you post about running Linux on those workstations the post will get moved. Posting in a distribution forum isn't necessarily applicable either. PowerPC is mostly a specific topic with all distros that support it being more or less secondary to the issues of running Linux on the platform.

I think that a Linux on PowerPC Forum could be quite helpful to those who are trying to run on this architecture(sp). I know that, for myself, it took me months to get a working system on one of my IBM power machines. A person familiar with different PowerPCs could offer advice on what distros do this or that. I had to go to the Gentoo PowerPC forum to finally find the answer to my booting problem.

Anyways, I think it would be a good idea. It would give PowerPC users a consistant place to post their threads and increase chances of a response.

PowerPC threads should normally get moved to Other *Nix unless the thread is specifically about the software or distribution.

yet these are hardware based questions, not Other *nix (OSX etc) questions. I suggest that they be asked in hardware, if the question is about a problem with hardware + linux. It is the same as AMD INTEL etc different chips...

This is exactly my point. There's no one place where those experienced with PPC+Linux can go to help people or get helped. Linux on PPC is a very specialized topic that most won't relate to. The best help I've gotten so far is in the Gentoo PowerPC forum on the Gentoo site. That's mostly why I'm running Gentoo on my IBM RS6000 instead of my favorite distro Debian. Debian kicked out their best PPC developer.

It was just a suggestion. After my trials with installing Linux on my power3 I realize just how difficult it is to find the people who have the knowledge to help. Even among PPC users, those that run Linux on IBM machines is only a handfull. Most use Macs.

Perhaps a PPC forum within the hardware section?

I believe questions about running Linux on IBM (non x86) hardware should go to the AIX forum, not Other *nix.

Just like specific questions about running Linux distributions on SPARC hardware go to the Solaris one.
