Linux help for newbies (where to find it?)

I am a Linux newbie, or at least I want to be. Microsoft does not have the appeal of Linux, which is what converted me in the first place. However, while I am trying to prepare myself for the 'big jump', the problem is that I like a lot of people out there who are beginning to lose the favour for Microsoft and its holey software, I need help in getting prepared to "jump".

There are lots and lots of things. Just google for Linux Newbie Guide. Here are a couple:
http://linux-newbie.dotsrc.org/

http://www.linuxlinks.com/Beginners/

Tip number one is to not be afraid of the command line. It has a bit of a learning curve and you don't have to become a master, but you need to at least become proficient at searching directories and editing text files. Many times that's the only way to fix a problem (or at least the only way the master's know how to tell you to fix a problem).

Another tip is to keep windows around (either dual boot or on a separate machine) until you're comfortable enough with linux to give it up. That way you always have a way to get online and get help...

Google is your friend, but search these forums and ask for help too. People are willing to help, but sometimes they do get tired of answering the same questions over and over. If you've searched google first or the forums here and are still stuck, they'll be more willing to help you.

Finally, take both of the quizzes in my signature to help you pick a starting distro. Usually you have to try a few before you get one that you really like.

For beginner people who want to have a go at the command line, I would recommend Linux Command.
