Can we use less agressive commercials on LQ? When I have two or more threads open in a seperate tab, the CPU goes crazy sue to the dancing penguins in the ads.

Commercials may be required. But can we cut on the CPU load they cause in my systems?

I don't see any dancing penguins in any LQ tabs. In fact, there's not an ad to be seen....

If you think an ad is causing problems, please put up the details - name of ad, url of ad, etc - Jeremy is very keen that they do not affect the use of LQ.

If you're using Firefox, this is what AdBlock Plus and NoScript are for...I have both, and I sure don't see any "dancing penguins".

I think what really needs to happen is for advertisers to lose their obsession with Flash, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I agree with MrCode, I'm sick of the advertising ****** thinking that I am morally obliged to see their ads. No thanks, the internet if free for now, and I decide what I see and how I see it, not them.

I am using Opera and this browser enables my to set preferences per site. For LQ I have disabled plug-ins and animated images, and my LQ pages are still like a 300 years old painting. I am not even aware that something could move here, except for the member of course. And I do see animated smileys, can't understand why that still works.

The others are completely right of course about the nuisance of moving or animared ads, some sites think it is necessary to put 6 or moving ads around and in the text. Strange that quality sites like amazon.com don't need those.

In Firefox: Install the AdBlock Plus plugin

In Konqueror: Enable "AdBlocK Filters"

Alternatively, get enough useful posts under your belt and they disappear...

I can't remember, I have the feeling that it may be 1000 posts but don't recall. You could also use your hosts.conf file to block them.

I thought it was more like 100 posts, but definitely don't quote me on that. I believe Jeremy has written more than once somewhere in some thread, what the relationship between posts + ads, so maybe a search can turn it up.

Something else in case anyone is interested: if animated gifs drive you mad, set them (in Firefox at least) so they only animate once, or not at all.

Sorry I can't speak directly about the 'aggressive penguins' as I do not see them..

It may well be that the advertiser inserts country specific ads, just like Google does.

It's a good hint to instruct Seamonkey to play only once. Thanks for that.

I wrote 'aggressive' but I meant 'high CPU loading'. English is not my first language so occasionally a dutch word gets translated literally.

Thanks for the feedback. If you're seeing a specific ad that you feel is distracting, please send me a screencap offline and I'll take a closer look. FWIW, you start seeing less ads after your first post. They're decreased dramatically after 10 posts and are pretty much completely disabled before you're in the senior member group.
