Instant messaging at LQ?

Has anyone ever discussed adding a feature to LQ to allow sending an instant message to another member? Presumably the member would have the option to turn this off and maybe to block messages from specific users.

An alternative would be something that alerts you (while you are online) that you have received a PM or a Visitor Message.

well I guess this is largely in line with a chatroom, which is never something that has ever been looked upon favourably as it removes these discussions from the forum, where they can be of use to many other people.

PM alerts can be set within your profile, I get an email when I receive a PM. IM or any other form of chat has always been turned down by Jeremy as it is unmoderated and any discussions would be off forum which goes against the idea of having all discussions fully available.

The "Show New Private Message Notification Pop-up" option sounds like what you're looking for.

@Aashima Singh: Stop spamming. Reported.

Well prior to that, everybody on this thread was (at least) a mod.
I suspect it'll be dealt with drunna ....

H_TeXMeX_H 06-27-2010 04:31 AM

Well, you can list your IM user name in your profile so people can IM you ... isn't that enough ?

mostlyharmless 07-07-2010 03:19 PM

Well, if it is adopted, please let's the default be no IM unless set...

I agree this could be an annoying feature.
