This is a suggestion:
I would like the "Add to Ignore list" option to really hide that user from my view.
The way it is now, I can still see the user (let's say 'xyz') in
the list with new threads or subscriptions, whenever xyz replied (last reply: xyz)
inside the thread, an annoying element saying "this post by xyz is hidden from view. click to see it."
my reason for ignoring a user is to avoid annoyance; the way things are now, it is too mild and even more annoying (to me).
I would prefer at least one of the 2 mentioned points to be addressed, preferably both.
i would NOT like to completely hide threads started by xyz.
Distribution: Currently: OpenMandriva. Previously: openSUSE, PCLinuxOS, CentOS, among others over the years.

Rep:
Personally, I'd like to know if someone on my "Ignore List" has replied to a thread I'm partaking in. As they may have said something that's quite relevant to the discussion and if so, it may save me from making a reply that's moot because others have already made zy or z point.
I think also that members have a right to challenge other's points of view, and that some members just don't like people doing that. I've had some pretty sharp reply's to some of my posts, even where other members have agreed with the point I was making (and/or defended me). And while I could have put them on my "Ignore List" or reported them, I choose not to instead, because it just was not worth getting worked up over it.
And unfortunately getting "annoyed" is just a part of life. I also think that if your more than happy to be always giving your opinion at almost every opportunity, you should be prepared for others doing the same in kind. Particularly if the thread has already been marked as [SOLVED].
I've seen a number of posts from the same member that don't help anyone in any way. I can understand people giving opinions in the non-technical "General" forum (or when the OP's asking for them), because hay, let's face it, it's not as if the non-technical "General" forum is meant to be for serious discussion - not that all threads within are just opinions and/or not a serious discussion, mind you. It's from my understanding meant to be somewhere where members can have a laugh and cool off, if need be (light-hearted chatter, so to speak).
I'd much prefer to not have that many on my "Ignore List" and just ignore comments from those that want to "annoy" others, rather than try and help as many as they can.
I also try and only post in the technical forums, when I do feel I have something worth saying. And even in the non-technical "General" forum, I try not to reply just for the sake of it. I've even had a few members try and "bait" me in to a reply so they try and continue their argument. And I choose not to reply to them instead (and didn't).
I also must admit that seeing this thread from ondoho is rather surprising to me; given the amount of posts I see from ondoho and the fact that, ondoho seems to like giving his opinion almost wherever possible. I'm not trying to be rude in saying that either, but I think that has to be said by the same token.
Guess I'm on his "Ignore List" now...

Reason: additions
I like the ignore list as it is. If I ignore someone, then I can choose to read the thread without them, or I can see what each of their posts said, on an individual basis.
I agree with first bullet: no reason to see that xyz just 'vomited'.
But not the second bullet (see ramble below, on "2nd")
(Beware: following maybe TL;dr)
Also, maybe a default (but possibly de-selectable) ignore-user option to:
never 'list new post', by anyone, if thread was started by an ignored user.
(I'm not sure whether this is already the default. Risk is: missing Great 'retorts')
But, 2nd bullet should (imho) be a selectable non-default sub-option, upon the 'choose to ignore user' page, because it's likely important to the flow of the Thread, to see that there is a (hidden) reason why replys suddenly 'went off the rail'!!!
And it's easy to just skip-reading over the box saying 'hidden', so maybe not worth adding.
The latter alludes to a 'ignore poisioned thread' Thread-ignore new(?) concept, where:
once xyz 'poisions' a (possibly formerly-good) thread, there's no going back, to ever wanting to hear about that thread again.
Or, an 'ignore user' sub-option, to always 'auto-kill' any&every Thread which xyz even 'touches'.
well thanks for discussing this with me.
i am well aware that i'm expressing my personal wishes here.
and judging from the reactions, this should be configurable and not the new default.
i just wanted my voice to be heard so the powers that be can choose to react.
let me re-iterate:
the only reason i'd put someone on my ignore list is personal annoyance.
for that, the feature is not strong enough imo.
seeing an element that says "the extremely annoying member xyz has just posted again! can you resist clicking to see it?" is worse than annoying - it's teasing AND annoying.
for that reason there's no-one on my ignore list currently.
and believe me, of the many members of LQ, there is less than a handful that i would prefer not even being reminded of.
about the disrupted flow of an existing thread with posts hidden by choice:
i am already doing that with a few members; i don't read their posts. just skip over them. if someone reacts and quotes a portion of xyz's post, i can still read and react to that.
PS:
my apologies if there is a member that goes by xyz. i'm not talking about you!

Peronally, users on my ignore list never say anything relevant to the discussion, that's why they're on my ignore list.
^ this is the second time somebody replied in this vein (although the first one was much more polite).
please don't do that, otherwise we'll all end up calling each immature and childish.
my point is:
since there is an Ignore User option, the additional feature request makes sense. otherwise one can just drop the whole Ignore User thing, IMO.
edit: in retrospect, that last sentence is too harsh.
To allow ignore to be more spontaneous &faster than going digging in 'My UserCP/profile/options/settings' to Edit Ignore List, I'd suggest:
Add an option to: clicking on the username:
Add <poster> to your ignore list
(after the current choices of:
View Public profile
...
Find More Posts by <poster>
Add <poster> to Your Contacts
[&maybe drop rarely-used choices, like Reviews&HCL])
Similarly, for a new concept of: Add just this Thread to my 'ignored threads' list
(e.g.: if I see the "...Fun...NOT" Thread 1 more time, I may not be able to resist smashing my screen
But there's no user nor forum I want to ignore: just that one TitledThread)
The way I read it your threads opinion is to have less opinions?!.
Tell a mod or ask the poster when something seems off-topic* or just continue sslloowwllyy evolving...
No, I would like my reading experience to have less garbage noise, much like your post here... It accomplishes nothing other than wasting both my and your time...
