How the Rep System works

The other thread is just too cluttered and hard to track, so I would like to just have this thread where I would like someone to explain the *exact* way the rep system works right now, and why it's better than my idea of always adding a fixed amount of rep every time.

Seems to me like this should work more like the Thanks system than the LinuxExchange rep system, because the LinuxExchange rep system is made to give moderator priveleges to people that are more likely to be trusted, not just a metric of how much a person helps.

I've explained "why it's better than my idea of always adding a fixed amount of rep every time" in detail in the existing thread. I've also explained how the current spread system works (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ml#post4082438). Please do not scatter information on what's already a difficult enough topic to follow. I'm closing this thread.
