How does one become a moderator?

I'm just curious...how can one become a moderator for LinuxQuestions.org?
Is there some sort of personal connection necessary, or is it just years of experience?
Or maybe something completely different?

"Becoming a moderator for a specific forum is usually rewarded to users who are particularly helpful and knowledgable in the subject of the forum they are moderating."

Discussion sparked the last time this was asked:

This was asked with a big thread in General just a few days ago.

And certainly posting in the wrong forums isn't going to help becoming a moderator....

Moved to Website Questions and Suggestions as its more suitable there.

Thanks, trickykid. Sorry to make you do that! It's just that I didn't know that the Website Questions and Suggestions forum existed at all; however, it is certainly the right place for the question.
