another thought, perhaps a 'what distro is best suited for you' page that asks a few simple questions to assess what a user wants out of their system (features, operability, hardware compatibility, default Window Manager, etc...) then based on their choices makes a few recommendations (in order of relevance)

yes this would require user contribution as well but seems like ultimately it would lighten the large number of 'which distro is best for me... ' posts that seem to crop up all the time on the forums

[Never-mind... answered my own question!]

Easier thread navigation

One thing I find "hard to use" is that the "next page" button is a single character, normal sized ">". Almost everything else one has to click to read the forums is a word (forum name) or phrase (Thread title). Finding and clicking that word is not a problem. However, for me, finding that one character to go to the next page in a thread is tedious. And as my eyes age, getting tougher.

How about an icon or "next page" "previous page" that would make this task easier?

Good idea. But the first thing to do is to get mods who are fluent in Chinese. No idea what forum software LQ is using. If it's SMF, then setting up a Chinese board is not a problem at all.

Happy New Year to everyone. May the sun of open source brightness shine ever more clearly in the days to come.

Possibly putting a select box on the page for creating a new thread.
This box would be to select Distro/OS. I have seen new threads that people ask questions and do not put any information in there, it should help posting just to get more information.

Great site!! Thank you.

Feature

Happy new year!
Sometimes it could be useful being able to create new tags - or at least have a button to submit a "new tag wish" to an admin.
What about that?

Greets and go on

Seconded. Furthermore the font size changes when going to the wiki so one has to adjust it every time. It would be nice (and an experience of more seamlessness) if the chosen defaults stayed the same all over the site.

We have no definitive plans to add this functionality, but if the demand is sufficient we'll certainly consider it as a mid-priority project.

I've experienced something like grapefruit girls(sp?) experience, except that I honestly can't recall if it was LQ or another forum that also had a semi-attached wiki. I had only a small antiquated bit of info to add, so I aborted the edit.
You say that LQ wiki is easier to reg than LQ fo, so I suspect I was at another fo+wiki site.

Without going to a lot of trouble (Jeremy), can you (fzzzy fzzzy) estimate how many contribs to wiki that haven't reg for LQ fo? Or how many wiki regs haven't reg for fo for a "long" time?

Is there any way to put the old name, say in parentheses, under the new name in the user panel? For continuity's sake. I believe that in the past you (jeremy) have encouraged established members to not ask to change their user names for fear of confusing people.

On the subject of user names, I'll bet that many don't know that spaces & capital letters are allowed, especially when they sign up. I certainly didn't, else I might be "Arch Toad 6" or even "Arch Toad VI".

There is an on-going, albeit minor, problem annoyance w/ long names pushing the user panel of the post area wider than its default. I'd like to see an explicit statement of the possibilities & flexibility available added to the sign up page. Perhaps also discourage single "words" longer than 10-12 characters. That would have to be carefully worded to ensure that it didn't imply that that didn't represent a limit on the full user name.

Same problem annoyance w/ unspaced distro lists & locations. Treating all obvious delimiters, starting w/ '/' as allowable line break points would help.

Unfortunately we don't keep any kind of stats like this, nor do we have a way to definitely correlate accounts.

While we don't encourage members to change their name (and don't allow members to do so themselves) we don't have any policy against them asking and I'm typically more than willing to make changes. I've seen some members put a "previously known as" type line in their .sig for a while, but it's not something we require.
