Error in 'Last Post' in main forum display
 

Hi,

There is an error that I noticed. The 'Last Post' displays the wrong user name in the main forums display thing. When I actually enter the forum, the last posted person is different from the one mentioned in the main forum display.

I have also verified this carefully (seeing also the subforums) and I found this problem. This seems to have happened only in the last few days.

I checked a couple forums just now and I cannot reproduce this. Is this happening to anyone else?

I saw this error in the General forum where the name

'Mara'

kept appearing all the time (in spite of the fact that others had posted. I also noticed this problem a couple of times before appearing randomly.

Nevertheless, it's not a critical error, but I thought I might bring it to your notice.

Whoops! Noticed this error again. And it happens all the time in the General forum! Does this happen to anybody else please?

UPDATE:
This is most likely a cache problem, but I'm unable to trace its roots, because this has never really happened before. Now it's a frequent occurence.

Could it be because my ISP has changed? Is there any possibility that the ISP caches whatever page I browse?

It could be related to changing ISP's. I can't think of anything that has changed on our end that would have caused this.

Given that Mara is one of the Mods for the General forum, is it possible that you just happened to look at the forum at a time when Mara was busy responding to a lot of posts? All the forums swing between having busy periods and quiet periods, and if a person happens to respond to several threads in a row during a period of otherwise low activity, you might end up seeing that person's ID in the "Last Post" column on, say, 6 or 7 consecutive threads. If you see it again, maybe you could take a screen shot and post it up somewhere.

In any event, I don't see this now and haven't seen it in the past. As I described, perhaps this was just a case where one user was particularly busy on a given forum. -- J.W.

Actually Mara had not posted on that forum at that time. Actually this problem is related to the cache, as I found out. When I cleared the cache and refreshed the page, the correct person name is displayed. I am now using a cable connection with an ethernet modem interface. Maybe the problem is because the browser doesn't "know" that there is a connection to the network and so reloads a page from the cache whenever I revisit it.

This problem is related to the ISP as I found out. Here's the exact diagnosis:

1. Every time I visit a page here, the ISP caches the page.
2. When I revisit the page, the page that is on the ISP's cache is reloaded.
3. This problem is not related to LinuxQuestions.org.
4. This problem is not related to my browser's cache.

That clears up a lot of things that were mystifying me recently :)

This may be the caching of your web browser as well.

Just in case you want real estate

Try using Mozilla instead of Firefox to try and reproduce the problem. And if it occurs, in the Mozilla preferences you can actually set your browser to download each page on every visit, which Firefox doesn't have that option for the cache. Then with that selected, see if the problem still occurs.

But you've been asking alot of questions finding errors when they're all going back to your own connection. I feel you should really investigate further before asking about all these related type issues your having with cache problems.

This problem happens on all browsers on all OSes that I use.

IE 6, Mozilla, Firefox and so on.

As I said before, the problem is the ISP (who caches every page I visit) and not LQ. On my dial up connection, LQ works fine with no problems at all.
