QUOTE :: "I think Avatars are a waste of space ..."
hard to say , things like that may help in bring in a lot more new members or guests , good for those ads too , in a sense , cash generated for good use , but i'm not too sure about whether they will "counterbalanced" the disadvantages of space wasted ...
QUOTE :: "I remember the 60's and 70's when miniskirts and bellbottoms were fashionable, then they went out of fashion, now strangely enough they're back in fashion.... "
if LQ really goes for that sunshine , flower power , fuzziness and dreaminess(an english??) , i'm all for it , preferablely with some 60s music played "inline" while you surf ...
Originally posted by abattoir What do you guys think of 'Importance' of a post. For example, a post which needs attention(like when somebody needs urgent help) should be higher up in the list on new posts(or threadlist), than a post where somebody thanks somebody else for the help he/she has received.
First of all, all posts, threads and questions are equal to one another. We don't prioritize any threads here because a member thinks their question is more important than any other member asking their own questions.
This is a free site where other members offer help out of their own spare free time, placing any thread as "urgent" is rude not only to the other members who post questions and wait patiently but is a disrespect to the site itself.
Personally if someone is needing answers fast and the issue is very urgent, they should seek professional paid help where you pay for support, where it's garaunteed or your money back, etc.
And like discussed many times before, there will never be avatars on this forum. I think all the moderators hate them, Jeremy hates them, they're trashy, unprofessional looking and unless all of the current Mods and Jeremy die and whoever takes over, there won't be any avatars in this lifetime.
And personally, I liked what this forum looks like, I personally think it's getting a littled cluttered but still isn't bad compared to some other Linux forums. The color scheme is right, it's not all bubbly looking, the images are rather small and don't slow the site down, etc.
A link at the top of the forums to a #linuxquestions IRC channel for "urgent" requests might cut down on the number of marked-as-urgent threads, if they start to become an issue. . .

The idea of an IRC channel has already been discussed before and won't be happening anytime soon. The problem with using IRC is that the questions cannot be saved in a way which would make people using the search function on this site find the solutions.

Exactly and finding ways to have the IRC channel moderated at all times would be very difficult. Some should realize that moderators are not paid and we do enjoy having a life as well..

Yeah, but it wouldn't be set up as an alternative to the forums: Just put a bot in there that responds to the word "urgent" with a link to the forum rules
Originally posted by amdrake Right now, the site loads fast. If you add a bunch of eye candy, it's just more overhead. We've got smilies. What else do you need?
Not only do we have smilies, but we have just enough smilies. I stumbled across an overclocking forum the other day where most of the replies were nothing but smilies clinking beer mugs, smilies raising the roof with a "Woop! Woop!" and dancing bananas! Ewww!
Thread moved to WS&F. It's much better place for it.
When it comes to avatars (mentioned a number of times above) there's one big NO to avatars. I haven't heard about Jeremy changing his mind recently, so I can tell you that there will be no avatars in the new release.

As has been mentioned, a site redesign is in the works. FWIW, the layout will be updated, but the LQ colors will absolutely stay the same. We still won't have avatars or a lot of buttons (in fact, we'll have less graphical buttons and more text links using nice DHTML and AJAX type interfaces). In the end, speed and content are what's important to LQ, not some "flashy" interface that just ends up getting in the way.
I like the site. The use of graphics is minimal, which makes for very fast performance. Form follows function, and this site is very functional, very easy to navigate, and did I mention performance is great? There are a few things I'd like to see implemented (I've voiced some of my ideas in more appropriate threads), but I think starting a thread like this is in bad taste considering how the post was worded. Just because the site doesn't have flash and animated GIF images all over the place doesn't mean it's a bad site; in fact I think the site is all the better because of its understated, functional appearance and great performace.
By the way: great response Jeremy, and I like the way you think.
