AFAIK there is no organized 24/7 coverage by moderators, they are volunteers who do this in their spare time.

It happens all the time. I probably report spam messages about once per week.

Actually, I just woke up and saw the mess in the forums that I co-moderate. I cleaned up the mess, unSpawn beat me to it and has already banned kellypink.
Currently there are 18 (+ Jeremy) mods from all around the world, but there is no 24/7 coverage. Moderators only have the rights to take actions like deleting threads only in their specific sub-fora.
I think it would be possible to get to a 24/7 coverage, if someone would step up and pay those 18 people for a full-time job.

Good grief! Give the mods a break, please. Even if the mods were paid for doing this as a full time job, there would be times when this would happen (ie, some 'member' would chose to spam the site....happens all the time, because the world has a more than adequate supply of ********s). It would then take the mods a while to get the message and a little more time to get things cleaned up. They don't just think it and it happens automagically.

That said, you should also bear in mind how much sense (or otherwise) this thread will make once the mods have cleaned up this particularly egregious outbreak of list spamming. Once kellypink and his/her/its posts have gone, will people be able to understand what you have written? I could, because I also saw kellypink's 'contributions' via rss, but this thread will be a mystery to those who have no idea of kellypink and what/why was going on.

The correct thing to do is just use the 'report' function and let the mods get to it when they can. That doesn't create any incomprehensible threads, and it doesn't create unnecessary traffic. Obviously, if something that looks like spam has been reported and is still there, say, 24 hours later, perhaps an additional report might be necessary, but, out of all the reports I have made, I can't currently remember one of those...

At the time of your writing it was 5.30 AM here and I were on the High Road at a 130 km/h speed!

I join the chorus to assure you that that at least 4 moderators (me included) have taken care of this spam spreading and applied counter-measures as permitted by their admin privileges. Moreover one of the team members asked the LQ administrator to perform a massive clean-up of the damage caused by this malicious activity. Considering the differences in time zones I think the issue has been dealt with promptly, hasn't it?

From a personal point of view, things are fine as they are. Due to the huge amount of new questions and new answers posted every day, I think we work better by managing only a limited set of forums and acting as a team. I can tell you that the LQ Moderators mailing list is very active (you can think at it as a forum with many many hits every day).

Actually all the members of the mods team have the power to ban spammers at any time with no retrictions. Only the deletion of the spammed threads requires privileges to manage that specific forum, since it means deleting a record from the LQ database.
