This has happened in both Firefox and Opera, but it doesn't happen each and every time.
I will be logged on and click on the button, "Did you find this post helpful?" and get thrown to a page that shows, 1, that I'm not logged on, and, 2, displays the following messages, "You must have at least 1 posts before being able to rate posts yourself; currently you have only posts."

Is there a solution?

Could it be that for some strange reason your session expired while you were reading the post.

Not the case, I'm afraid. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for it. It also happens, now and then, when moving from one thread to another.

Edit in: Just happened again. I clicked on "Save" to post this message and was signed out and thrown back to the index page. This the third time in the last several minutes I've had to sign back on.

for me the session never expired, and I have never experienced similar messages. Maybe the cookies or the god of the forum's engine

This is one of the RARE times I would bet cookies. An expired cookie somewhere that's not properly updating or clearing.

I would try manually deleting cookies & cache and try it. I myself have also never seen this happen, but then I also have both Firefox and Opera set to delete all cache and cookies when I close them, so every time I visit a website, I get all new cookies.

Well, I also have Opera and Firefox setup to delete cookies and clear the cache after every use and often clear them both between sites.

After I added the "edit in" to the last post I scrolled to the top of page and clicked on "Forums" and was again logged out and taken to the index page.
Who knows? Not a major problem, just a p.i.t.a.

As a regular Opera user with Opera set to delete new cookies after each session (and LQ an "old" cookie), I have not encountered this.

Since it happens with both Opera and Firefox I don't think it is Opera.

OTOH, Opera has been having its problems lately, at least the Linux builds. Opera 11.62 and 11.64 hang so often here and on other boards, I've gone to Opera-Next, which has yet to hang or freeze.

I guess we are comfortable with what he know or are use to using and I've been using Opera since the whole thing fit on one, 1.44 meg. floppy disk, but their recent problems are forcing me to use other browsers.

Firefox isn't bad, but it just doesn't "feel right." Konqueror is actually not bad. I like the "look and feel," but it is SLOW. Midori? Not worth having to install all those gnome dependencies and not quite ready for prime time. Chrome? I wouldn't trust Google any farther than I could pick up their headquarters building and throw it.

So that brings me back to Opera. Wish they would get it together. Besides the recent hanging and freezing problems Opera has never "played well" with SMF boards. It displays the pages properly, but try posting or editing a message. What a complete P.I.T.A.!!!

Quite often I come to this message board and browse the questions and answers without signing on. If I see something I want to reply to, and click on Opera's "wand" button to sign on, it kicks me back to the board main index page and I have to work my way back to the forum, thread, and post to which I want to reply.
Hmmmmmmm..... maybe the current problem has something to do with Opera afterall....

Well... so far today the problem has happened with Opera, Opera-Next, Konqueror, Firefox and SeaMonkey.
Just now when I clicked on "Forums" at the top of the page to leave one forum and come over to this one, I was signed out.
Oh, well...

I'm not able to reproduce this and I haven't heard this issue from other LQ members. Have you tried deleting all LQ-related cookies? Are you checking the "Remember Me" box?

As previously mentioned, all cookies are deleted on a regular basis, often between sites I visit.
When signing on I leave the check mark in the box next to "remember me."

Opera's other problems have had me using other browsers and I've settled on SeaMonkey. It has come a long way since the last time I used it and it is noticeably faster than Opera or even Opera-Next with hardware acceleration enabled. In a way it almost feels like "going home" as the look and feel is very much like Netscape which is what many of us started with, way back when. :)
Anyway, the problem persists with SeaMonkey. When I click on "Did you find this post helpful?" I get logged out and taken to a page saying I have to make a post before I can grade a post. And, again, when I click on "Forums" at any of the three places at the top of the page or in the right panel, I'm logged off.

Are you browsing through a proxy or cache that may be broken? Are there any plugins/addons that you use across all browsers?

On this visit everything is working as it should and I'm using a proxy (Tor). During the previous visit(s) I was not using a proxy.

This morning, in Slackware 64-current, but without using a proxy, the same problems re-occurred using Firefox, SeaMonkey, Opera and Konqueror. So, just for chuckles I booted to the Windows partition which is running Xp-SP3. You really can't get anymore different than that :) and the same problems exist using IE, Opera and Firefox.
I'll go back, later, and try it again in Slackware, but using Tor, and see if that, again, "solves" the problem.
Could it have anything to do with the Internet connection?

OK. Just installed the Tor Bundle for Windows. It launches, in turn, Vidalia, Tor and Firefox. Everything is working as it should while in the Tor Bundle.

Hmmm... Must be the Internet connection?
