I think if we have some IRC kind of CHAT here then it will be more usefull for all to comunicate with each other and to help each other.

you and a dozen other people

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...der=descending

if IRC were to be set up it would NOT be a help channel as we believe it would detract too greatly from the forum. irc logs would not be a suitable archive for information, and this site is designed for help, and as such has bult up a superb archive of information (that should be used more)

I dunno about that... You could always get the pearls of wisdom from the chat logs and post them here...

But the problem with people turning towards the chatroom is still there. We could make a non-support chat room. Just to get to know each other, relax, hang out... You know.

I agree with acid_kewpie,

I've tried going through some logged chats/lectures and alot of garbage it said (in my opinion) yet some of it is useful.

It would be quite good though.

I volunteer to set one up on a nice, clean, quiet network, where we can all chill.

I think that would generally be a bad idea. For the same reasons as stated above.

We would be "chillin" and someone would pop in with a quick and dirty question. Someone would casually respond, and that would be it. No documented Q&A for others to read about.

I guess that you could offer it to the "contributing members" as I would assume that most of those are people who might just "chill" and not pop in and ask a quick question, like "How do I know which kernel I am booting" or something like that.

IMHO I think it would be better, if someone wants to chill, to maybe have an unofficial IRC channel setup or something like that.

Chat would greatly decrease amount of answered questions, since everyone always wan't to get a quick answer. But an irc channel like MasterC suggests it is a good idea. We should call it #linuxquestions

i don't think you should call it anything of the sort without asking jermey for permission first!

besides, there are ALREADY plenty of linux IRC rooms, just pick one from the list...

Hehehe... Sounds like you guys haven't been on IRC lately... The "ban and ask questions later" strategy that most chanops are using has left the IRC community paranoid and very sensitive to channel rules.

You could just put in a rule "this is not a support channel, ask your questions at http://www.linuxquestions.org/". Of course, you should also not name the channel "#linuxquestions", because that would be misleading, to say the least.

I think it's worth a shot... A pilot run... You never know, if we keep shoving ppl onto this web site, we could actually increase the userbase.

With regards to documenting Q&A, I wanted to suggest this a while ago, we should have a "faqomatic" system, which is world editable (or editable by a select group of editors) which would periodically review the site, and the IRC logs (a bot on the channel could keep extensive logs), thus creating a more organized knowledge base.
