Rather than this thread go round in circles, perhaps we should do what Jeremy says, and encourage newbies to put their location and distro.

Ach, weel, as you can see I'm not shy of these things myself and I agree - new users should be encouraged to fill out their profiles. However, I note that you are using a pseudonym? (Or your parent's have a very odd sense of humour...)

Now for me, Auckland City had, at the time I mentioned, about 1.7 million citizens. Not large as cities go but still large enough for there to be many "Simon Bridge"'s. It was a sobering thought that some nutter got upset enough at something I'd said to chuck rocks at someone not remotely connected to me.

Notice: this guy didn't actually find me ...

Now I live on a small island with about 1000 permanent citizens (swelling to around 10000 in Summer) and I am so much easier to find, even from just my name.

Revealing a general location and a distro can do very little harm - I agree - and the good can outweigh any possible bad very quickly. For eg. I find myself much better protected in this small community than I ever was in the big city - the very lack of anonymity is protecting me. So - I use a proper name which is odd enough to be real (it is) and to hell with it. Maybe I'll meet a tourist who recognises me from one of these boards?

I use my own name though. Never thought of using a pseudonym at all till I noticed that everybody else does it all the time on forums like these. :)

yes, I agree. My point was not to make it mandatory for users to fill in thier info, but to encourage them.

do you really need to know my name to let me help you /help me with a linux question? especially if you have my distro and location information.
