Burstnet.com ads and LQ

Every time I came here, when I enter the forum, the adress bar of my browsers change and show me : http://www.burstnet.com/cgi-bin/ads/...25/RETURN-CODE
but I suppose it's normal and it's just an ads link or popup ads or anything like that...

The problem is that this ads or this ads link does not exist (or is down?) so every time I enter forum, if I forget to hit "stop", 30 sec later my broswer pop me a windows saying the adress do not exist.

Anyone have the same problem?
and
Can you stop this mod? :)

I never have this problem. The ads load just fine for me. Unfortunately a mod can't stop this, only Jeremy can control the site ads.

That site is rarely down. That really should not be happening. What browser do you use?

It may not be down frequently, but it sure is sloooow sometimes.... That could cause it... You know, if the web browser gets impatient and decides to time out.

Bumping this thread because Burstnet's at it again. I haven't noticed some of the stuff talked about here but for the past few days my status bar does say 'Waiting for burstnet.com' and just haaangs for a long time. There's got to be a way to time *them* out - if their server can't jump in a second or two, LQ should load anyway - or LQ should load first. Something. It really gums up the forum.

Odd, though - I don't time out and it'll hang for over a minute.

It looks like it's a flash ad doing this. I am trying to track it down so I can disable it now. If anyone does get the ad let me know the company name. Thanks!

The link goes pretty quick and now I can't re-enact the ad. Anyway, here's where it refereshes to (after going to an https site  ):

I am having similar problems. Sometimes I get a blank screen. Nothing happens no matter how long I wait. Often the browser is waiting for a-ha.com. Then I click on "reload" and the page finishes loading and then reloads.

Sometimes I get a message about a missing flash player, which I have never used on any browser. I click cancel and then nothing happens, I just have a blank screen. On other websites when I cancel the missing flash player message the page continues loading.

From the way that the various errors occur I think that linuxquestions.org is working OK. The problems seem to occur when the link to the advertising host is executed.

Also the errors run in spurts, making me think that each error type is associated with a particular ad. I keep getting the same error over and over for several seconds and then the problem disappears. Do the ads cycle for 30 seconds each or something like that? i.e. do you show an ad to all comers for 30 seconds, then switch to a new ad for the next 30 seconds and so on?

I am using Mozilla 1.4.

Gah! I've tried adding 127.0.01 burstnet.com to my /etc/hosts, I've tried blocking it from loading images, I tried blocking ads.ah-ha.com as well, and I've even saved the html and removed the ad javascript! I've now resorted to turning off JS until jeremy can fix the bloody burstnet.com ads, they're clearly generating some html which is stopping the page loading in Moz 1.3.1 here, and it's lame! I too dont have the requested flash plugin. Without JS I get animated gifs, which is ok.
This is kinda getting me a little POed. Good job I wrote down the searchid of the new posts since my last visit.

I am happy to report that I have tracked the ad down and have disabled it. Thanks for the help in tracking it down.

Nope, still needs JS disabled in Mozilla 1.3.1 to get past the ad code. :(
The rest of the html is sent, but nothing after the ad is rendered.

MasterC 08-10-2003 10:56 AM

Woohoo! Thank you :)

not sure if this is the same add others are having problems with. but the add from partner.ah-ha.com, not sure of company name is preventing the rest of the forum from loading.

jeremy 08-10-2003 11:20 AM

The ah-ha ad was the one I removed. It takes a couple of hours after the change is made for it to take effect.
