Being able to turn on/off certain things on the pages.

Hi,

Is it possible, or could it be made possible, to turn on/off (make [in]visible) the following features:

- The notices block,
- The 'Thank You' related items.

I personally think that this site is getting to bloated with features that do not actually add anything useful ('just' my 2c). Certain things can already be switched on/off in the Edit Options part of the site, but I would like to see more, especially the 2 I mentioned above.

I'm not sure if others have the same feeling about this, maybe if that is so my request could be taken into consideration.

The red X next to a notice will permanently get rid of that particular notice.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I know about the red X, I'm talking about the whole notices frame/window.

Maybe people want to see this, but does it have to be on every page? Isn't the first page enough (or not at all, this being an option).

Also it takes up space at the top of the page, I'm not here for the (repeating) notice(s) but for the questions/answers, the less scrolling down (and/or clicking red X's) the better.

If there are no notices, the "Notices" box is not shown at all. Some notices are only shown on the first page view, while others may persist for a certain amount of time (or until you hit the X).

I personally don't care who was interviewed or the latest LQ stats or ..... that's not why I'm here, and I see it as space that could be used in better ways, but I guess that is obvious by now ;-)

Part of the question remains: Could it be made possible, to turn on/off (make [in]visible) the notices block and/or the 'Thank You' related items?

jeremy 03-20-2009 05:05 PM

The notice block *is* invisible unless there is a new notice specifically targeted at your usergroup that is marked as permanent and that you have not dismissed yet, which takes a single click. We've posted 2 of these in the 6 months since we introduced the feature. We have no plans to allow you to globally disable the notice system. The only remnant of the thanks system that you can't hide is the little blue thumb in posts. There's already a lengthy thread on that topic and it's possible we'll change that in the future. Thanks for the feedback.

Sorry Jeremy, but emphasizing the '*is* invisible' is kinda pointless. It is not until..... And that's what the questions was about in the first place (which has been answered, thank you).

About the Thank You System part: Do I assume correct that hiding the remnants of the thank you system is possible after the site-update? I can't at present find any hide options for it.

Allow me to say what I think.

druuna,
I can't see the point for starting a thread like this,in my opinion it's meaningless.First,if you have clicked on a red X's you would see that there is no more notices and who said that these notices wouldn't inform you of some questions and answers for wich you said you are here for only.BTW,is it so hard to click on a red X every 3 months or so?
If there is no blue thumb in a post I don't see how could that improve your browsing expirience here at LQ or make you feel better. What's so wrong about being able to say "Thank you" to someone for whatever reason? If you don't want to do it,you have every right do so,but to start a new thread basically because of a thumb and a notice or two...hmm.
About space,if you have read related thread which is not tehnical, you would see a post where Jeremy said that space is not a problem, but you only read tehnical Q & A ( I guess ) and if you're so concered about it maybe you shoudn't have started this thread at all.

Just my :twocents:.

@alan_ri: I did ask/invite others in my first post to write down their opinion about what I suggested, and it looks like you don't see the point. Telling me that starting this thread is meaningless is not the way to go. I personally don't like the abundance of features that have been implemented over time and are, in my opinion, taking away the focus of this board. Jeremy has been more than willing in the past to listen to users and change/implement things if enough people wanted it. Looks to me that that is reason enough to start a thread about this.

I was not talking about space on any server, I'm talking about browser page space, that what is seen when a page is served..... Everything other than the question (and possible answers) takes up browser space and pushes the 'important stuff' further down, forcing me to scroll. And besides that, but that is my 2c, the given information is not wanted. An option to turn some of these extra's on/off would be nice (again my 2c).

In my opinion it is not about somebody being able or willing to click on something, having to scroll more often or seeing (to big a) thank you message. It is however about having fun and enjoying oneself when on this board........ I could just decide to stop my contribution and leave, but I though it wiser to first figure out if certain things could be changed/improved before taking such a step.

I must have touched a raw nerve somewhere, Jeremy's and your replies seem to indicate that I'm barking up the wrong tree here, which gives me something to think about this weekend.

@Jeremy: Is my assumption mentioned in post #7 correct?

alan_ri 03-21-2009 06:14 AM

druuna,
I have nothing against you. While replying I only had "what is best for every LQ member and LQ itself" in mind.I know that Jeremy has been busy lately and he has done so much lately for all of us that I'd say he doesn't need threads like this now.
As I said, your problem comes down to that you don't like blue thumb and find very hard to click on a red X every now and then.Well,I'm sorry but I can't see that as something so dramaticaly important.
I for sure wouldn't like to see you leave and/or stop your contribution in any way.I'm sorry if I made you feel that way,it wasn't my intention, but there's no reason for such attitude.
You've said what you think and I said what I think and that's the beauty of discussion.
The goal is to make things as best as they can be for everyone,so,of course not everyone will be completly happy with the way LQ just is,but I'd say that LQ implementing or not new featuers every now and then with considering all opinions is one of the reasons why this site is so valuable.

druuna, you are correct that we are always open to changing how LQ works based on member feedback. In fact, "threads like this" are critical to LQ IMHO. As for the thanks system, as I mentioned there is currently a thread about this already going. Based on that thread you'll be able to hide all thanks-related items on your stats tab after the next code upgrade (should be very soon now). Based on additional feedback it's possible we could make further changes, but none are definitively planned at this time.
