avatar?

Hi everyone, I just joined.
This is probably the supidest question imaginable - and I assure you, I'm not being lazy - I've been going around in circles for 20 minutes now and haven't found if there is a place, in this "user-friendly" environment, where I could add an Avatar to represent me. Might someone be kind enough to give me a link or something?
thank you. S.

And you have just bumped a thread from 2005 here too - post reported.

Some fora don't condone usage of avatars - this is one of them. I think it's for the simple reason that it can make the place look cheap and cluttered.

One way around this is if LQ held a selection of stock avatars for users. But there isn't such stock and I don't think there's a plan to introduce one.

There is Edit Profile Picture option in your profile settings. The picture will not be displayed next to your username in a forum but will be displayed in your profile.

Welcome to LQ TigerTamer,

As noted here and in the other thread, user profile pictures are something members can set. Meanwhile the site doesn't go to far down the social networking perspective.

As far as topics for discussion, this is fine, but not Linux Newbie related, so it has been moved.

Not a huge deal, I hope the responses have answered your question.

Looking forward to any technical Linux questions you may have.

Best regards, and once again, welcome!

It's nice to see that someone is hunting down the criminals with vigor.

Sorry about that, I hadn't realized I posted it in the wrong place.
I'll try to put things into the right place in the future.
Cheers!

Perhaps you can make a suggestion that old threads be closed from discussion.

It's just someone making the mods' jobs easier for them, that's all.

What may be human and friendly to one can be tacky and childish to someone else. At the end of the day, avatars are a matter of personal taste. I have seen some great ones over time and some terrible ones - but you might think the ones that I like are terrible. It's all relative.

There is a certain sophistication, politeness and professionalism to LQ, and having gaudy avatars all over the place is one sure way to dampen that. It's not necessary, it risks the board being completely worksafe, and this is by far not the only forum that outlaws them.

If you wish for something to represent your personality, let it be your posting style, your ability to learn, to share useful information and to be an upstanding member of the Linux community. That will get you much farther than any profile pic.

Agreed, I like to see an avatar, sometimes people on here think a bit too much of themselves, and need dose of frivolity.
In lue of an avatar you can set pretty much whatever you like in your sig, some people use links to software some use links to stickies some use a quote, as long as it's not offensive or illegal.

P.S.
Welecome!

Yeah, like anywhere else in the world. LQ is just another online forum. Do not take it too far.

And as I said it's possible to add picture to your profile but it won't be displayed next to or under your username. But I got nothing against avatars, I'd welcome them as a nice addition.

Just so you know: this has, in fact, been suggested many times.

There are enough exceptions that it's best left as an unwritten rule.

I make no throwaway comments on LQ, and my comments in this thread are no different. Jeremy and the mod team run a very tight ship here, and I know of no other site in the Linux community where there is such mutual respect among the long-term posters. For instance, the Mint forum is saturated with bad advice and attention-seeking, the Debian forum has lost its edge and is going the same way, and the Ubuntu forum has over-restrictive moderation [one can't even voice a negative opinion on MS or Canonical there without being warned or banned]. Linux Questions encourages free speech, good advice, learner development and community participation - but it doesn't take kindly to trolls either. If you've ever had to admin or mod a site you'll know it's a difficult balance to strike.

LQ must be a tough site to run, and it's run very well. We should all be thankful for it. In the Linux community it's not "just another online forum", it's the high watermark by which other fora should judge themselves.

Well said Lysander666, personally, I agree with you 100%.

@OP, you already CAN have an Avatar, average_user has told you how to do it, what more do you want? There doesn't need to be an Avatar displayed in every post made, it's fine the way it is. If you're more interested in bling, you may want to find a different forum.

Also, now that you have bumped an old thread from 2005, people are responding to that as well as this thread about the same topic, that's exactly why you should have just started a new thread to begin with instead of doing both that AND bumping an old thread. So it's not "criminal", it just makes it harder for everyone else, and therefore is just inconsiderate to others.

It wasn't so much that sentence, but what was implied, if you can read between the lines. ;)
