Automated profanity filter
Just out of curiosity: Does LQ actually have an automated profanity filter like PCW does? Please post here, Mods and Jeremy, if you have the answer.

AFAIK there is no profanity filter here. I've seen people get away with dropping straight-up s- and f-bombs, but they're usually dealt with by the mods.

Dude seriously get over it already. Where did you grow up in a monastery?
Its in books, newspapers, television, radio. Let me guess you are Amish or you were homeschooled, so this is your first time being out in the "real" world? BTW your computer is possessed or haven't you noticed all of the daemons? |

What do you expect and how far do you yourself go when it comes to this? Did you remove all the files on your Linux box that contain, for example, ass and shit? I very much doubt that...... Do you realize that this is a multi-cultural board and that strict automated filtering (based on English words) will exclude a lot of very legitimate names, words, files and commands? BTW: As stated before in the previous posts about this subject, we do have "filters" that deal with profanity: The Mods, Jeremy and the Report button. |
Agree with all of the above.
I don't see why it's such a problem. I mean when I was in Middle School everyone cursed as if they were all a bunch of little sailors. I didn't curse, but I didn't care either, it made them look bad. |
Well... down in the boiler room with the other lags...the worse it got the more I laughed... really I nearly had a seizure, come to think about it,its been a while since I had a laugh like that... LOL
|
Yeah, and even in high school I hear it often. It's just that being Christian really makes me think just how stupid and evil it is to curse and start fights.
Of course, I say let them. They're just going to get themselves in fights and in turn either in jail or killed. |
The OP seems to have no sense of humor and very little tolerance for the viewpoints and approaches of others.
Just an observation. |

I'm reminded of the joke: "Hire a teenager while they still know everything!" |
Oh, no, not that thread.
Are you trying to say that because you are young, this is an excuse to propose radical anti-profanity measures and expect them to go through ? It's true that in High School, there were some kids who had to cover their ears when profanity was uttered, and cover their eyes when profanity was viewed. Why is that ? I don't know. The world is as it is, you think by not looking or hearing it'll go away ? or maybe somehow get fixed ? If people are dieing all around from some plague, are you gonna close your eyes and repeat "It's gonna be ok" and pray ? When you hear the nuclear sirens, do you cover your ears and think of a happy place ? |
There's some unnecessary nastiness here- give it a break guys. People are allowed to think different things than you, even when you think they are being stupid in what they think.
Sure, profanity is an increasingly common part of the public sphere, but elsewhere Jeremy has mentioned that LQ is supposed to be G rated. So let's keep it that way. TG |

profanity
My :twocents: on this:
On our OS's we consider additional unneeded software to be "bloat". And in the context of LQ, with our relatively low number of threads/posts in any given timeframe which require profanity moderation, I respectfully suggest that an automatic profanity filter would be bloat and overhead that the system doesn't really need. We get more posts that require moderation for being written in a foreign language, than requiring moderation for profanity. On a hosting site + forum some years ago I was a moderator, and on that site there was such a filter in place. I admit that it "worked" reasonably well, but given the amount of time the site admin spent making regexes and whatnot to plug into the filter code, the benefit didn't really justify the cost. Put another way: Given that the LQ community is comprised mainly (from what I can see) of reasonably respectful adults and reasonably mature young people, who usually take it upon themselves to keep their posts G-rated, I think a filter is not needed. If our site were childrenofsailors.com or similar, I might have a different opinion! :) Until/unless Jeremy decides an automated filter is something LQ wants to try, please do as others in this thread have mentioned/suggested: when anyone does encounter a questionable post, feel free to use the REPORT button, or PM or email any moderator or Jeremy, and direct us to the offensive language or objectionable content; we will take care of it (and its author - muwaahhahaha!) as soon as humanly possible. Cheers all! |
