Instead of the page giong dark and havign the image in front of it with a close button, the top part of the page goes dark and that's it. There's not way to close it and when I scroll I see that only the top of the page is darkened (so that it covers everything when you scroll to the top).

Reason: corrected error
I don't usually use Konqueror for web browsing, but I've tried it and found it's better at loading attached images if you change the View => View Mode to WebKit.
The snapshot looks rough, and the view mode keeps reverting to KHMTL, but it works temporarily. Firefox has no problem.
One more edit.
Found out about changing the default web browser engine in Settings.

I don't know where you are located, MTK358, your profile doesn't say. Coming from Germany I use the local locale (DE) for normal users. Root is in (US)-English. Both localizations differ in parts really widely, i.e. menus-entries are not in the same places (besides sometimes confusing translations) and the structure of the menu-tree can differ too. You simply might have to search Konqueror's settings in browser mode...
<edit> That was out of memory. First, it is KDE 4.6.0. Second, you have to click options. You get a popup with tabs, the needed tab is immediately opened and has a button with a drop down menu with Webkit and KHTML. Lastly, it is in this case the same for root and the users . </edit>
I agree with that. What is the point of covering up a page with a another page when, more often then not, both need to be viewable. Opening it in a new tab by default would be the way to go in my opninion, which makes switching between them possible.
Although this feature does work under opera (my browser of choice) I find it annoying and have though myself to always right click on an attached image (which opens it in a new tab in opera). Maybe you (MTK358) can do the same in Konqueror?

Middle-clicking (which opens in a new tab in most browsers, including Konqueror) doesn't help.
Right-clicking, choosing to copy the link's URL, and pasting it in the URL bar seems to work.

This is and has always been an option at LQ (and is actually the default). If you want a simple direct link to images, you should make sure the following is not checked:

Dunno what's up on your machine MTK358. I had the opportunity to try it with Konqueror Version 4.6.00 (4.6.0) "release 6" of openSuSE 11.4_64. Works splendidly and shows all of the image .
