Thought I had nothing to lose, so I re-installed everything. Checked each disc twice to verify no problems. Seems to have sorted out almost all the issues I had.
I now have the pacman stuff on Yast courtesy of the the Jem Report site. First two attempts failed. After a re-boot it worked perfectly and accepted the new sources. It has enabled me to DL mplayer and Java and a host of other software.
No wonder I was getting absolutely nowhere and nothing seemed to work.
Azureus is now installed and working in spite of the Java verification tool telling me I did not have the latest version installed. Just have to bone up on how I get it to peer through the Linux firewall. I assume that's the problem. I have the dreaded yellow lights, crappy DL speeds and the pop-up message warning me that Port 6881 UDP needs to be open.
Googled for info and it looks like the SuSe firewall is way more imtimidating than the XP one. So it may take a good while to get my head around.
One quick question. How do I get the Azureus blue frog icon to appear on the desktop? The only control I have over starting it up is to DL a torrent file. There'll be times when I want to shut Az down and start it up again with what's already scheduled for DL and UL.

That's great! Glad to see you sticking with it! I'm sure you'll be glad you did!

I get that too but I don't use P2P often enough to be really concerned about it at the moment. Someday I plan to look into something I snagged not too long ago while reading LQ posts: Setting up Your Router or Firewall (Port Forwarding) may be of some help.

ROFL! Is that all there is to it? Before reading your post I was trying to work out in my head how its done using the command line but your way in much easier! But now I can't get it out of my head until I know what I was thinking would really work:
