Add capability to tag a member
 

A suggested improvement for the site would be the ability to tag a member as part of a conversation. Much like other web portals do, if when writing a reply you were able to use the notation @username, or something similar, and have that cause a configurable notification to the person.

I say configurable notification, so that users could disable email notifications, if they chose to do so.

An additional enhancement to that would be to have a search specification which could search for all conversations where you were tagged.

You could then not worry about email notifications, but also check at your convenience updates to determine if you were tagged, and also decide if you cared to inspect the resultant threads found any further.

"Modern" bulletin board software has those kind of features pretty much as standard. The FreeBSD forums, does for example and that uses XenForo.

However this site uses vBulletin 3.x which has been EoL for the last three years and was already a legacy version which has been superseded twice.

I believe the intention has always been to move off this platform, but for whatever reason, probably very good ones, it has been delayed.

The Android and ChromeOS and sister sites were using a newer version of the same (looked like v4.x) before they were closed down, but I have no idea if the intention is to move to something like that, or something else entirely.

Other forums have an option to reply as PM, then change the recipient - this would allow notifying out-of-thread people without Twitterfying the place, and without forcing such an invite to be public.

Not saying it "can" be done, I suspect that it cannot with the software being used.

Not saying that it's always the best thing, but people do "mention" other users. I would not opt to be notified about it, but I would use a search spec to determine if there was any occurrence. It also can be a matter that if someone does so to ask a question versus something else, you'd likely be able to see that in the brief from the search results, and then choose to view that thread versus not. Same thing for Quick Links -> View Latest Threads, I can use that to see which threads have activity.

Speaking just for myself, this is not a feature that I can envision finding of any utility.

A few people like to use LQ with browsers like dillo or lynx or w3m etc.
If the upgrade to LQ 2.0 ever comes, they will most likely be out for good.
The same for the "mention" feature - I can't imagine it working without javascript being a crucial component.
Currently the forum works completely without js, if you choose.

I have not followed the evolution and its discussion. While I am not offended by the technology it would probably be nice to strictly limit JavaScript to the code which is developed for the occasion and *not* use third party libraries.

Otherwise, I will block them anyway, live with the inconvenience or without LQ.
