A would-be forum for multimedia.

I would like to know where most question regarding multimedia go, that is, what forum. Thanks.

While the OP is kind of vague with respect to details I do not think, with all due respect, that "probably" is enough for members to base a decision, let alone base taxonomy, on.

For instance:
- Hardware: say sound, video, capture card hardware specs,
- Software: say configuring multimedia applications,
- a distribution forum if you're having difficulties that are specific to that distribution or release.
So "it depends" would unfortunately be the best answer given the buzzword from a previous-millennium and lack of detail.

I thought the OP meant multimedia apps, I didn't consider that it could possibly mean audio and video hardware ... I've never heard of this being referred to as multimedia (without also appending hardware, in which case it would clearly be hardware).

Maybe I just shouldn't have answered, because the answer is obvious, or the question is too ambiguous.

I think that the problem for Multimedia as a forum is that it's not distinct enough for LQ to differentiate. To expand: Games has it's own forum because it is clearly delineated from Software - much of the time, a solution for getting a game to run will be different to getting any other piece of software to work. As we're not a music/video/whatever board, multimedia boils down to being a hardware or software problem and the threads should be put there.

Thanks a lot, XavierP. Yours is a categorical answer. It is also true that, AFAIK, LQ receives a lot of audio/video posts, be it hard or soft, as compared with posts not touching this matter. Therefor, I could reformulate my question this way: where, statistically speaking, do audio/video hardware (respectively software) related questions go, not where they should go.

On the other hand, I'm glad to know "we're not a music/video/whatever board", for reasons I prefer to keep to myself. All the best,

Enrique.

In a more ideal world, there would be a multimedia forum here, however, we have so few questions that are specifically multimedia that it would either be very empty or would become a third option for questions and would be flooded with sound/video card questions that would be better off in the hardware/software forums and thus would defeat the object.

As well, and if you are new-ish to the boards this may seem hard to believe , we do aim to have as few forums here as possible to cut down on the confusion of where to post. Plus, if you are a multimedia type (which a special interest in the subject) you would be fed up that there aren't enough of your peers to make the board useful and that people are posting in the forum incorrectly.

While I hate to divert people offsite, if you have a question that is specifically multimedia related I would suggest either posting the question exclusively on a dedicated forum or post here in soft-/hard-ware and post on the dedicated board.

Personally, the more programmer-like LQ should [would] be, the happier I were.
Thanks for your extensive reply and let me tell you I made a fool of myself. Because the object of writing LQ was optical disc authoring. And many a time I find myself recording motion pictures and music in a CD or DVD. So I confused both concepts. My regards.

No problem - the joy of having been here for a while is that you tend to see a number of things more than once! That said, LQ is always receptive to requests and suggestions and none of the board decisions are set in stone. If we were finding a lot of multimedia specific questions cropping up and there were sufficient demand, it is likely that a sub-forum would be created.
