a separate section for regex questions?

Would it be a good idea to have a separate (sub)forum for all things involving regex problems?

Just a thought. IMO, it'd be nice to have all those threads in one place.

What say you?

How many threads/month are really there? Perhaps the mods know...

I'd say regex is a bit too specific of a topic (and not nearly high volume enough) for a dedicated forum here at LQ. Thanks for the feedback.

Ok. So be it. Thanks for your reply
Personally I'd still find it useful to have it in one place:)

LQ does have a thread tagging feature. It could be used to tag threads related to regular expressions.

Just a suggestion.

Yep, that's an option as well. I don't use the tag feature on LQ. I think I'll start doing it to help in topic searches.

Thanks

2 things wrong w/ tags: You can't subscribe to them, & they are optional. OTOH, every thread has to be in a forum, & I can be notified by e-mail about the new & updated threads in any fora that interest me.

I'm aware of that. That's why I'd go for a dedicated forum (which I'd subscribe to). At the same time I understand the reasons why Jeremy won't do it.

Are regex questions really that common here?

Probably not, but for me it's an interesting topic and having them in one place would be handy for people who want to learn/practise them.

Having said that, I do agree that having a dedicated regex forum could spark off requests for dedicated BASH, python, perl, C, PHP, etc. sections.
LQ not being an strictly programming forum, it makes sense to keep all scripting/programming problems in one bag.

I mean I'd still like to have a dedicated regex section, but it's just for my own convenience.
As my view is not shared by (m)any other LQ members, I think it's only fair to mark this thread as solved.

Case closed.

Kenny_Strawn 03-05-2011 11:11 AM

I'm pretty sure that if this were implemented it would be a sub-forum of Programming, as almost all topics related to regex are programming questions. Either that, or we could also have some sort of special LQ search category (similar to the Zero Reply List) specifically for these kinds of questions, but that would be a bit much.

You'll be able to subscribe to tags, accompanied by the standard notification options, in the near future.

FWIW, the earliest thread found by an LQ search for "regex" dates back to 10-02-09.

600 / 18 = 33.33
