Is there anything preventing people from creating a phony profile to thank every post from their real profile? I guess now if my thanks shoot up to 100 tomorrow everyone will know what's up.
Why would you ever want to do that ? What are the benefits of doing that ?
I'm not doing it. But get real, the "benefits" are obvious. Maybe you think it's a stupid idea but I know you can see why someone would do it. Someone might think their profile would seem like it belongs to someone more technically inclined than they really are. Or maybe they would think their posts would be less likely to be viewed as spam.
Maybe that is BS and it really would make no difference but you know it might seem like a good idea to some people.
I'm just trying to understand its level of plausibility.
It can be done, but you really think a spammer would go through all that trouble ? Even if they would, their spam would be reported just the same.
Also, one thing preventing it is that Jeremy knows the IPs of the members, like in any BB, the admin has access to them. So, it wouldn't be too hard to notice the same IP starting a whole bunch of members...
I would think with NAT that's not an uncommon situation.
Yes, but you can also look at the number of people and distribution. If 100 or 1000 users all get started one after another from the same IP ... you can suspect this.
Then if they all start adding thanks to one user, these things can be detected. Not sure if they will be, but there is a chance.
And if they start thanking someone 100 times but don't have the posts to back it up, well, flags will be raised. The only way to make the dummy accounts plausible would be to make large numbers of useful posts to back up the high thanks numbers. At that point, is it really worth it?
Yes.
EDIT:
Whoa, wtf, I have 5 thanks now? I just noticed that. I had three yesterday and I know I haven't posted anything useful in at least a year. Somebody is screwing with me.
EDIT:
Yeah, it was this thread where I got thanked twice. Someone is trying to frame me. I have only one account, I swear.
