Jeremy, don't forget "portage" for Package Managers. There's also pkgutils as well.

I think Linux From Scratch should be added to the desktop distribution of the year, I know it's not a conventional distro but it should be in there somewhere.

Package manager

Pacman, of course, but what about yaourt which sits on top, seamlessly integrates AUR and runs as normal user with sudo requests as needed?

Only actual Package Managers are eligible for the category.

I second the motion for B/LFS to be added. It's unconventional but still it's worth a nomination, as is VoidLinux.

Seems that mepis is not active anymore, I suggest replacing it with MX.

http://www.mepiscommunity.org/mx

Also, Some distro specific desktops like pantheon, budgie and deepin can be added to best desktop of the year category.

I'm still interested in feedback on this suggestion.

Would be nice to see Point Linux.
Also, MEPIS didn't have any release for years, and since the community-continuation MX Linux is nominee on its own, MEPIS should be deleted.
IMO any distro that didn't have a proper release in 2015 should be discarded. Yes, Slackware too.

I always liked SMPlayer but never really cared what its backend is. I know you can run Mplayer directly but i think this should be addressed somehow.

I don't see where to vote. I would vote for the new MX-15 as the best desktop distribution.
Just released 12 24 2015
