2003 LinuxQuestions.org Members Choice Awards
The 2003 LinuxQuestions.org Members Choice Awards are right around the corner and I'd like some feedback on the Award categories before the contest starts this year. Here are the awards so far. If you have any suggestions let me know. Thanks.

LQ Moderator of the year?
/me ducks But seriously folks, how about mail server of the year? |
Possibly multimedia player of the year. May need two sections. Video and audio.
|
Ooh yeah! Could be a holy war over the video player of the year.
|
Few quick questions. How does one vote for these? Is there going to be a link from the main page or is a community bulletin going to be sent out? Or something else? Is it completely open or is there a nominations process beforehand? If so who nominates?

How about 'new application of the year' for newcommers to the scene? This would give promising applications a bit of encouragement...
Dave |
How about the best P2P sofware for linux?
|
Worst windows app?
With the exception of the actual OS of course.... |

How about 'Best Concept' or 'Best Direction' of the year? Or, to put it less kindly, 'Vaporware of the Year'. :D But, seriously, I think it'd be interesting to see what people were anticipating - what they thought was a good direction to move to, in addition to what they were currently liking. Might be too vague, though.

Best shell?
Best File Manager? Of course the most important catagory Best Kernel! I wonder if we'll get another "greased-turkey" this Thanksgiving like last? Boy that was my favorite kernel of 2002. Sure it screwed up everyones filesystems, but at least you could laugh at the funny name after you cried your eyes out over your borked system. |
Best multimedia authoring tool of the year. Multimedia authoring is still sort of a fledgling area in Linux and should be encouraged, at least on the desktop. From articles in Linux Journal I get the impression Hollywood is using it, but if you want say to do multitrack direct to hard disk audio recording yourself, say as part of a home studio, good luck. It's theoretically possible, there are those who have done it, but like I said, could use some encouragement.

Other SW to rate:
CRM/ERM... (compeire & co.) Bookkeeping CMS/web app development sys/community sys Only software? The HCL is just born... But interesting HW coud be: A specific box/mfgr/model disk array controller SCSI disk array controller ATA videocard 2D analog videocard 3D analogvideocard 2D DVI videocard 3D DVI network card network gear like routers etc. (was already a LQ) scanner printer and much more. Suggestion: Let's wait for Jeremy's response before flooding the thread with dozens of additional HW items of interest. |
Thanks for the feedback. Only a few days left until the polls open. Here are a few thoughts:
- Best media player will be added. - Mail server has a good possibility of being added. - A Hardware section will not be added (at least this year), but this did give me a good idea: Best Linux support from a hardware manufacturer. Any other ideas? --jeremy |
Best file manager!
|
Yes, I'd like to see how you handled a 'file manager' category. For example, can konqueror be in both the web browser *and* file manager category? Because it is both. And for me the answer is "bash" but that won't be included because it's a shell (I suppose that could be another category, give the zsh fans a chance to express themselves), same as vim not technically being an html editor.

--- EXPLORER.EXE --- who agrees, explorer.exe for the worst app. also microsoft office, although that is quite good, how about internet exploer and internet tools, they call it a suite of internet realted apps, well windows messenger, a rehash of msn fuks up outlook/outlook express and you cant upgrade msn. Internet explorer, just a borswer wheres the extra feature, pop-up blockers, the content filters (i know theres one there, but im on about one that works), speed, easy customisation, speed, ohh i said that, speed again and oh something microsoft arent very good at, speed and reliability. for total windophobes, exploere.exe is the shell, the thing that always crahses with the taskbar, the start button and my computer. |
