If you run a search (or check for new posts) and then try Quick Links / 0 Reply Threads, you still have to wait 40 seconds until you can access the 0 Reply Threads list.
Some of the search limitations are very annoying - especially the 12-page (600 result?) limit. There are about 1200 active threads over the course of any given day here, often more than that.
Here's a suggestion: How about giving contributors decreased search limitations? I'd definitely become a contributing member to get rid of the 40-second wait and the 600 result limit.
I'd definitely become a contributing member to get rid of the 40-second wait and the 600 result limit.
My 2 cents: I've never really understood this posture. Why not become a contributing member simply because LQ is a valuable and worthwhile site, period? After all, I believe that the "annoyances" you mention exist for the purposes of limiting the load on the servers (thus improving performance for all LQ'ers) as well as usability (if a search returns over 600 results, the query is probably too broad). In other words, these conditions don't exist because they are intended to annoy; instead, they exist because they are intended to give a well-balanced and fair experience to all visitors to the site. I don't view that as a bad thing, and would encourage all long-time, regular LQ'ers to at least consider becoming a contributing member. Again, just my own 2 cents
So; by not checking in morning and evening, one misses out on about half the threads. There used to be on average 26 to 27 pages' worth of "new post" results over the course of 24 hours. Now it's pretty much artificially confined to the last 10-14 hours' worth of results (depending on activity levels obviously)
Edit: I've reported my original post in this thread, requesting that the thread be split. I did not intend to hijack the thread with my tangental comment.
I applaud anyone who consistently scans new threads and posts back whenever he/she has advice to offer, but at the same time, I think it's reasonable to say that LQ's growth has increased to the point where it simply is impractical for any single person to try to monitor the full set of new threads and/or posts in a given day. There are just too many members posting too many comments for anyone to keep track of them all, and at least for me, what I try to do is keep an eye on those subforums for which I might have useful advice to offer. (is that even grammatical??) Anyway, my point is just that as any site gains membership, sooner or later it becomes impossible for anyone to keep up with every single new post.
If I recall correctly, I saw a post (and screenshot) from finegan in late 2002 (give or take) talking about "shooting the penguin", where someone who actively monitored the forums could post responses quickly enough that the most recent post in every forum was from himself/herself. In other words, when you went to the main LQ forum page, the most recent post in every single forum was from one person. That's a seriously cool achievement, although it would be impossible to replicate today given the number of LQ'ers and the level of posting activity.
Anyhow, I'd say a big Thanks to anyone/everyone who regularly checks in to LQ everyday
I initially found the whole 40 second thing a bit annoying, but my opinions about this have changed. I don't know how many of you have noticed that after the code upgrade and the introduction of the 40 second thing, the site does not slow down too much when compared to when we were using the old code and settings.
