[Hari's Linux Corner] Random Linux game: KGoldRunner

I thought that as part of the "Random app" feature I might as well include games. Those who feel that Linux lacks in games certainly need to pay more attention because some of these Linux games are far more addictive and playable than some commercial Windows games. Sure, they're not the flashy modern games with pumped up 3d photo-realistic graphics and advanced sound effect, but they're fun nevertheless and if anything even more addictive than your typical 3d FPS game. So this week, I'm featuring KGoldRunner as the random game. It's not a game I normally play in KDE (KSirtet and KBounce being the ones I normally play) but today I took a look at it and it's easily one of the more addictively playable games for the Linux desktop. A simple and playable pacman like game, it has more strategic elements than pacman and is certainly challenging enough to keep any gamer addicted as you navigate the level using ropes and ladders. The basic premise is the same as any other pacman game - collect all the points in the level without making contact with the baddies - but this one also features some more strategic elements and since there's only one exit point from the level, it's far more challenging. In fact, I've not yet completed the second level as I write this.

Judging by the screenshot, I used to play that game on the old Commodore64. I think it was called Bladerunner.

A game I recently discovered is Briquolo ... Nice 3d graphical "Breakout" type game. Unique feature: It doesn't keep a score. You just have to play for pleasure.

A combination of easy controls and a fairly involved, but straightforward strategic approach really makes games addictive.

Man I can tell you what - this game KGoldrunner is addictive :D Please don't start playing it if you have something important to do ;)
