In Suse 10.2 getting Remote desktop to work on my windows pc at work. Sometimes when i am on call i need to hit the office computer which runs win xp pro. and being able to remote to it using my suse box is totally cool.
Also the ability to watch dvds using mplayer.

Hooking it to a T1 line with a serial card so we wouldn't have to buy a cisco router was pretty cool. I also like my wedbav and mp3 server. And, well setting up my wife and kids all with wireless is pretty cool too I guess.

My six year old loves the gcpompris suite and tuxpaint so that't pretty cool teaching her math and stuff on it.

My wife well she still uses Windows except for the old notebook she has in the kitchen so she can look up recipes, read email and do a little work.

My son uses Windows too for his games-I'm working on that :-)

And you know what it really cool about all of this? With the exception of the serial card for the T1 router (which is at work anyway) I wasn't forced to pay one red cent for any of it, I can use it on as many computers as I want, I can upgrade it when I want and I can make it work like I want. Now that is cool!

i got many things done with linux since i posted here last, but mplayer with linux was my first accomplishment from the start cos i learned about many things before i was able to install it. so for me mplayer is def the coolest

The coolest thing I have done? Accepted the fact that there is a vast wealth of software to do pretty much anything I want with my PC and laying my win2k disk to rest. That was back in October of 2005. The six year journey to that day was really quite something. I have to say thanks to my good friend Toon who got me hooked after setting up a Slackware file server for me back when I was still interested in the Graphic Design gig I had going. I'm still paying on those student loans.

Getting Linux to work.

Setting up a dial-up gateway server on a IBM PS/2 using Redhat 6 and sharing the connection between 2 Win98 systems. This was before I got broadband.

The coolest thing I've done in Linux? Make a kickass StarOffice presentation that brought my B in Art class up to an A.

That and make my own basic Linux site in NVU.

I forget when I posted on this but since then I've gotten a Suse 10.2 box with xgl working the 3 screens. Learning how to program in C++, because linux has all the compiler there (and the internet is awesome). Get a seconded cluster running a not cluster package (still in construction), get vsftpd running (may be posting thread soon , lol), and running a backup LAMP server (again posting soon for auto syncing between windows )

2 mail-server (postfix+courier)
3 pptp server for remote office
4 IRC-server
5 Proxy with antivirus and ACL
6 traffic accounting with ipcad
7 schedule backup server
...is it cool enough?

1. replace my linksys router with a linux based firewall/router on an old Dell machine.
2. setup slack as my home server for files and websites.

Both of these machines are headless in my basement and I can only access them via terminal.

Feat 1: Learned the basics of Linux ... but wait ... that's still not complete!

Feat 2: Built a complete iptables firewall from scratch (totally hand-written), which includes blacklists and whitelists, as well as port management. Did this for my work when they told us to get a firewall, then wouldn't give us any money.

Feat 3: They also wanted a listserve ... but again, where's the money? FC4 with Mailman tackled that!

In 3 years, I've been able to:
A) Get neat eye-candy.
B) Have software from a box instead of hunting the internet for hours.
C) Customize! I can choose my window manager, my file manager, etc. EVERYTHING.
D) Not a single spyware, not a single virus, no $20 firewall
E) Not once having to defragment.
F) LONG reboots.

Only thing left is to wait patiently for Beryl, Compiz, and Enlightenment .17 become full fledged stable versions.

And to get servers up and running. Getting servers to run with crappy documentation and my knowledge sucks. One day postfix, et al, will get good documentation and I'll be able to run my mail server. Until then, I'll enjoy desktop linux.

Getting better sound from my Linux box *with no soundcard* than I ever got from Windoze. Wheeee!

(Still don't know how it does it, but too much to explore right now to chase it down)

Learned MySQL (and am still learning php) , got my wireless network up and running, but the ultimate coolest thing was showing my lil' brother I turned his winxp in a mandrake when he got home from school. (I liked his expression on his face, he didn't really liked it I think)
