Hello Linux heads --

My name is frank delgado, and i'm a geek. I'm also a student at Cal State Fresno and enrolled in a course called New Information Technologies. As part of our final project, we need to present a business proposal to a company encouraging them to adopt a new technology.

While other people have chosen "winner" topics like the "multimedia refrigerator" and "cell phone PPV movies" our group has chosen the REAL-WORLD topic of introducing Linux to the small/medium sized business whose needs mainly involve the use of a word processor, spreadsheet software and a web browser.

The members of our group need to interview people via e-mail regarding the Pros and Cons of Linux, as well as information that the general public should be aware of that would pretty much only be known by Linux users.

Your input will be cited in our presentation which is a competion between New Info Tech classes, and will be archived here in our Mass Comm department office-- you'll be a part of history! Haha...that sounds like the hard-sell.

A friend of mine and I run a small bicycle shop in San Luis Obispo. When we took over the store we entertained the idea of switching everything over to Linux. The old owner wasn't very computer savy and did all the book keeping, inventory logging, etc. by hand. It was time to enter the 21st century.

Neither one of us wanted to pay for any of the OS, Office, Peachtree, and POS software liscneses. For a little business around 3,000+ is a lot to shell out. We have a small network of about 3 computers. 2 are registers and 1 is for the mechanics in the back. There is also an open wireless network for customers next door at Starbucks and McDonalds to use so they don't have to pay.

We couldn't find any POS software that either of us trusted to keep track of the registers or the inventory. We shelled out the money for the Windows solution.

Sucks...

but you still use Linux at home as a hobbyist? You see, it's comments like these that i'm super interested in....the point of our presentation is to see how we would pitch this to small businesses. I totally didn't even think about what OS the registers would run on.....

does anyone else have any info as to software that can be used with a register in a business like rmartine's? You guys are AWESOME!

at zdnet there are a series of items in regard to porting to linux for SOHO with POS software it may be of help

the company i work for in the UK, a large retail company, are just in the process of changing over to linux from windows

ill try and find out which software they have changed to in regard to POS

This also comes off as some sort of advertising to help your project or study get going in which we do not allow our forums to be used for especially since your first post was posting this.
It comes off a little different when you've been a member with more than 30 or so posts and have contributed to our forums, not posting your first thread as asking for help for other projects which can come off as spamming our forums and advertising.
