I recently connected my Slackware box to my University's network.

Well, they are having massive problems. It is the start of semester, and lots of the other students are getting pop-ups because they are running Windows with out-of-date security. I just had a look at one such computer -- as well as pop-ups, the browser kept getting redirected to an unwanted page. You know the kind - lots of links to suspicious websites

All I'm getting is regular log entries from my firewall. Not a single disruption to my service.
