Triple booting conquered...and I did it my way!

I've been trying to get my PC setup with a triple boot of WinXP Pro, Red Hat 9 and Mandrake 9.1 (soon to be 9.2) for about a week and a half. I read anything and everything about this topic in the last week that I thought I was going to find the end of the internet searching. After a few trial and error attempts, mostly errors, I finally figured out the one small menial task that I had been messing up each time. That one thing is: I kept installing a new bootloader with each distro I installed so the new one would overwrite the old one and cause problems because each would be looking in their own respective bootloader to boot. I finally came out of the fog and realized "why make a /boot partition on the 2nd distro at all?", so when I partitioned the 2nd distro of Linux I simply left off the /boot partition, installed everything and when it asked me to reboot I first booted into the first distro I installed and changed the Grub file (menu.lst) to include the second distro booting information, then rebooted the machine and found both distros in the bootloader along with Win XP.

I may have done it in an unconventional method than what I have read instructions for but it works and it works the way I want it to so I guess it can't be that bad.

Just thought I'd share as this has been nagging me for the last week and a half and it feels good to have it conquered.

Question Red Hat & Mandrake

I used to have my computer configured to triple-boot with Red Hat and Mandrake. But when running two dissimilar Linux distros: Corel and Mandrake, I wasn't as lucky. Whenever one would boot, the other wouldn't, even from a floppy. I tried everything. Running lilo in Mandrake would wipe out the Corel boot loader. Re-installing Corel would mess up the Mandrake boot partition. Next I tried booting both distros from dos. Still no luck. Eventually shelving the Corel was the only option. I think the /boot partitions are incompatible. I'd like to hear from anyone who has triple-booted with such an arrangement Any ideas about how to overcome this problem would be appreciated.

Talking Success!

Finally I've got both Mandrake and Corel working on the same machine. The steps to the solution are as follows:

First: Install Corel Linux on the hdb (4Gig) and load its lilo to the master boot record, which is on the other disk (hda).

Second: Install Mandrake on the hda (20 Gig) and install its lilo to hda5, which is the root partition. The hda1 is the swap file which serves both installations. Mandrake's Control Center makes it easier to place the boot files on a partition than with the Corel distribution, so it makes sense to do it this way.

Third: Edit Corel Linux Lilo with the entry for the Mandrake.

other=/dev/hda5
label=Mandrake

So you need two lilos to do it, and since there can only be one bootable MBR you have to install one of the lilos on a partition.

In hindsight it looks rather simple, but figuring it out was the dickens

Now I can run Corel WP Office 2000 in a more compatible distro.
