The reason I love Linux ......

I must tell you why I really love linux.

I have an old pc (P3 1000MHz processor, 125 MB RAM and 14 inch monitor). When I installed Winduhs on it the pc would groan if I tried to run some large application, there was also an issue with the speed comming down after using it for a few days.

Now I have Vector linux installed on it. The speed was ok - but better compared to XP. A couple of days ago I installed kernel 2.6.28 on it. After two days of tweaking the kernel I have made it almost customised. (I know I am very lucky, but I have an entry of the old kernel in lilo). Now when I boot the pc up and run top as soon as it comes up it shows that it is using only 25-30 MB of RAM in KDE! To top it if I boot it up in console it peaks at 20-25 MB of RAM. And its a fully functional pc. Nothing extra installed on it.

I also learned to play music and go online with a CLI! There is nothing I can't do with this PC that I wanna do. Honestly. a Linux CD is more valuable than an enterprise server (but thoes are my thoughts).

I got suse 11.1 on my amd 1900, it is frankly slower than suse 7.1 that runs on my pii 250 ibm laptop. the problem is the amd machine crashes with 7.1. I am thinking of going over to solaris 10 and buying a sparc. linux is ok when it works, problem is it can't self configure then compile and install the optimum os.
mind you i prefer a slow linux than a vista that does a fwe pretty pictures and nothing else.

If you have installed the generic kernel and all the modules that go with it, yes suse would slow down on a P2. But rememer Suse is linux and it is very configurable. I would suggest first to minimise the use of KDE4, that would save a lot of computing power. Try using the Xfce4 window manager. Also if you can try and recompile the kernel - uninstall everything you do not want.eg. Virtual machine support, floppy dive, leds lights supports, some ethernet cards you do not have, amd so on. There is no why with some twweaking Suse should be faster.
