Succesful Switch to Slackware! Super!
Here's y'allses weekly success story: I dumped 'doze, tried Fedora and Mandrake (each one lasted for about 24 hrs), and then settled on Slackware. I haven't had such a happy computing experience since I made my own boot menu by editing my autoexec.bat (so that I could choose between win3.1 and dos).

And I've gone from cursing at Visual C++ to vim, g++, hopping between six virtual terminals and fluxbox, with xmms playing in the background! All in just 21 days (or so), and for the low-low price of... oh... uh, so maybe I should send the Mr. Man, Patrick Volkerding, some money...

Anyway, this isn't to brag about my l33tness, just to say wow, Slackware is great, and thanks to all the people helping out in this forum. It's been a great resource in getting everything up and running smoothly (yes, this is my first post, but I've been using the forum since day 1 of my install).

A Happy Noob

Oh, yeah, and I have a Dell Inspiron 8200, and I'll be happy try to answer questions if anybody's having trouble with a similar system.

Cool I am using a 8200 as well with Slackware 9.1

Welcome to Slack! It has been my distro of choice for the past couple of years. I've been using Linux since around 1997-98 and have tried many different distros, but Slackware just "feels right." It always works, is fast, and stable. Good luck and welcome.

Yup yup. This site is by far the most useful I've found when it comes to struggling with unfamiliar territory in the Linux world.

Heck, I've been registered for months and I have yet to have asked an actual question or create a new thread of my own (aside from my "Hi, I'm Melkor" intro thread ;) ).

So far, every question I've had and every issue I've run into has been easily answered by doing a quick search of the LQ forums.

Hey SCerovec, this thread was posted 3.75 years ago...

What's the matter? It was in My 'New posts' list. If it's considered new by the LQ's managment-code, I can see no harm in greeting a (new?-)commer to Slackware. :p

Didn't pay attention to the date - had overtrusted the LQ's engine, sorry...
From now on, i shall allways look at the date - scout-honnor this time :)

Can't imagine the OP's face when reading this...
