consensus: so far LINUX 99% nay 1% not bad as a matter of fact its better that seen! progress is being made every day. looking with close observance the giant is becoming a midget(MS/W). as I stated prior to this
post human needs in instant gratification is our only stumbling block in forging ahead of Ms/W. pay head asap public will turn on its heels n bite back on the money grubbers.

Even with Windows there is no instant gratification. One has to learn Dos and how to install/use programs. There is waayyy too much Windows software out there. It is just that everyone has gotten comfortable with Windows.

A reflection on this helped me make the shift to linux.

SOP, I could not be bothered with defrag, scandisk, reduce virtual memory size and all the crap that happens to a Windows HD, so I go to Best Buy or Comp USA and get the largesd HD that $50 at the time buys. Stick in the second HD, let er rip. No backup worries, etc. I just tell them it costs $50 (some of the time, I will eat it for family and close friends).

Windows XP is said to be very stable. Hence for the NEW home PC user, specially in North America who is happy with the system license and uses his/her PC for a very long time there is not going to be any motivation to try Linux. Hence, in this segment one may actually see a decline in the use of Linux.

rivjay; perhaps in short term, maybe in long term not . from long history of ms too many fixes, errors and crashes, oh don,t forget security leaks. they
may still abound and that will in time will be true indicator of linux,s rise.
as the phoenix.

Just saw this on TV. MS has reported record profits. 3 bucks bonus per share. Dividends are double of last year. Company sitting on major cash chest. Gates made 3 some billions.

I am not against MS. Companies with good products/efforts need to succeed. MS does have useful software and has contributed.

However, it is the fact with the reboots and viruses etc., etc., that is not right. I hope some sales/marketing/promotion crack shots get together and promote Linux big time. I am sure that several are out there who will benefit from Linux.

I've been doing this for a while:
I go to apartment dumpster areas and gather up computers people throw away.
You would'nt believe what people throw away!!!
I take these machines load them with Linux if running strip them for parts if not and give them away to coworkers, neighbors etc. who don't have computers.
I am currently building several machines which I will donate to charities for the holidays. I'ts been my my experience doing this that people not "into" computers
or not all that "computer literate" take to Linux like fish to water. I get a real kick out of the email I get describing their latest accomplishments. IMHO,the grass roots approch is the best way to promote Linux.

Your efforts are appreciated. You are a very noble Dumpster Diver.
Perhaps you will find this site interesting:
www.dumpsterworld.com

There people discuss techniques and share info. For eg., one person once mentioned about dumpster diving the trash of Computer stores.

Thanks for all the kind words. I have to admit I have also thrown some good things in the garbage in the past as I didn't have the time/knowledge to mend them. So, if someone wants to get them/fix and then use them, why not ?

Besides recycling is also very important and good for the environment. It is not just about money, it is also about reducing waste from an environmental point of view.
