Now I am actually a Noobie
 

I am now very excited. I just installed Mandrake 10 on my computer and can now claim the status of Noobie. Before, I guess I was just a pre-noobie.

The installation went without a hitch. I probably installed too many packages, but I want to test stuff out and I had plenty of disk space.

Thanks to all the Linux users who put out a plethora of useful and helpful information about this wonderful alternative to Bill Gates' empire-building-ways.

I am just gushing with excitement and enthusiasm to learn more about how to use this tool effectively.

Now, a quick question; How many of you got absolutely no sleep on the first night of your first Linux installation?

I don't think I will sleep tonight; I probably should have waited till the weekend since I have to go to work tomorrow and work more on Windows.

I probably stayed up until at least 3 a.m. ;) Of course, I do that all the time with Linux anyway :)

i been up for 4 days :) i still havent installed but my cd order should be here today so it is kind of exciting.... i guess :)

I spent a couple of days with not a lot of sleep with my (quite smooth) mandrake 10 install...

And I've been using linux since the very early days of slackware 3? and redhat 2 :-)

But a new install takes a while, esp if you have to set up samba and internet sharing and getting win4lin and the nvidia driver to co-exist... And reinstall the important apps like gtk-gnutella and q3 and ut original...

I was up until 4AM last night just kind of getting used to the system; configuring my desktop. I actually thought it was 1:30 before I looked at the clock and it said 3:53!!!!! This stuff gets into your head; it is addicting. After I installed this distro, I had a feeling of control over my computer instead of Winblows doing stuff for me that I didn't want it to.

Tonight, I am going to configure Apache and try to get SSH to work so I can play around with my system from work.

you are at the top of a very slippery slope, when that XP (or whatever) boot screen shows up tomorrow you are going to start thinking....hmmmm, whatif....maybe...oooh: I could install it at work too:jawa: :eek: :cool:

The downside is that as well as getting no sleep you won't get much work done either for a few days :D

Hey, you must be experienced. Right now I am at work, and instead of putting together the Dreamweaver training manuals I should be working on, I am perusing this board and saving posts and threads that I might be able to use later.

Luckily, I have an understanding boss; he is actually burning a copy of Suse 9.1 for me since for some reason I can't access the Windows server where it is located (I was able to last week and the permissions seem fine -- I have finally stumped our network admin)

Anyway, I was just thinking last night that I should partition the hd of my work laptop and dual boot that machine too. :) I stopped myself, saying that I should learn a bit more first before I screw something up and lose something I really need.
