Main Library is Windows FREE!!!!

Hi,

I live in Birmingham in the UK and went to Birmingham Central Library for the first time ever to do some research for my AS-Level electronics course that starts in september. I walked in and was stunned at the fact that I couldnt find a windows PC in the ENTIRE place. On all 5 floors of this vast library! Not a windows PC in site. They were all Sun Microsystems PC's!! Running Netscape!! WOW! It was amazing. :D

I hope that more libraries, public internet cafes and other public places will adopt non M$ systems!

I asked my school why they wouldnt migrate to Linux. They said "No-one knows how to use it". LOL. How pathetic... they then went and upgraded to windows XP and it is apalling.

lmao, what do you think they'll do when the next os 'upgrade' is subscribtion based?

You lost me on that... can you explain... i am probably missing some vital piece of info

The whole point of Microsoft's "dot Net" platform is to charge a subscription for software. As in monthly payments like your telephone of cable bill. In fact, there will be no more IE updates. 6 is the last one. The next one will be incompatible and you will have to update to Microsofts next generation OS.

They've been planning on not having any CD's. For windows or office. No setup files. No software piracy.

Oh really! I didnt know that. How strange. If they have no CDs do people have to download it? If so that is really ridiculous as what if you have 56k connection? I doubt people will take to it... Bring on Linux!!

"If they have no CDs do people have to download it?"

I would think the main way they will get it out there will be to have it pre-installed on hard drives like they've been doing.

That is easy, if you live in the UK you know eactly what they will do - raise council tax !

My friends dad pays about £2000 a year (i think) for the MSDN subscription, that gets him all beta MS products though... Which is a heck of a lot of CD's and a lot of useless ones like Word, in German!!!
